About the Role

Communications Intern for Food Land and Water Program - Communications

This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days per month in the office. You will be based in our office in WRI Indonesia, Jakarta. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position. 

Program Overview

WRI Indonesia is an independent research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. Within our Food, Land, and Water (FLW) Program, we envision critical ecosystems such as forests and peatland across Indonesia to be governed fairly and sustainably. We believe sustainable land use management is key for Indonesia to meet its climate goal, in line with keeping the global climate target below the 1.5 degree Celcius warming treshold, while providing sustainable livelihoods to forest-dependent communities and conserve biodiversity in the landscape. We intend to achieve this through safeguarding the remaining forest and peatland from deforestation, degradation, and fragmentation; maintaining forests and peatland quality through sound stewardship; and restoring degraded ecosystem to improve its productivity, conservation value, and ecosystem services.

General Internship Roles

Communication Intern will support the WRI Indonesia Communications Team in advancing communications initiatives within the Food, Land, and Water Program.  The intern will be actively involved in developing social media content related to program activities and events, including both offline and virtual engagements to ensure the key message are translated into clear and engaging storytelling.

Additionally, the Intern will support in maintaining other communications channels including website update, assistance in media engagement activities, conduct basic communications analytics, and support the development of various communications products.

Based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement, the intern will report directly to Communications Officer. In support of WRI's DEI commitment, you are responsible for actively participating in these collaborative efforts by integrating equity into your work, our workplace, and the organizational culture.

What You Will Learn

Through this internship program, the intern will have the opportunities to:

1. Acquire new knowledge by gaining exposure to communications works within the NGO context, particularly in food, land and water topics, including understanding how environmental issues are translated into communication strategies, messaging, and public engagement across various platforms.

2. Enhance project management skills by supporting the coordination of communications activities, content production coordination including managing content calendar, tracking deliverables, and ensuring timely output.

3. Stakeholder engagement experience by actively involved in engagement activities with various types of stakeholders such as government officials, nonprofit organizations, and local communities. 

4. Writing experience by contributing to the development of communications products and publication about  with guidance from mentor to ensure clarity, tone, and consistency with organizational messaging strategy.

Internship Development Approach

Throughout the internship period, the intern will receive guidance, supervision, and regular feedback from assigned supervisors to support both learning objectives and professional development. The internship is intended to provide meaningful exposure to the communication works while allowing the intern to contribute to ongoing program activities in a supportive learning environment.

The intern may also have opportunities to:

  • participate in internal discussions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions;

  • observe stakeholder engagement and program coordination processes;

  • receive mentoring and constructive feedback on assignments and outputs;

  • strengthen understanding of professional practices within nonprofit and research-based organizations.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor's degree from Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, Environmental Studies, or other related fields. Final-year student are welcome to apply.

  • Demonstrate interest in communications, digital media, content creation, storytelling, and sustainability-related issues.

  • Familiarity with major social media platform and have basic understanding of social media content planning, copywriting, and audience engagement strategies.

  • Basic knowledge of website content management system (CMS), media monitoring, or communications analytics is advantage.

  • Ability to conduct desk research and synthesize information into digestible communications materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic and multicultural team environment while demonstrating initiative and a willingness to learn.

  • Highly motivated, strong can-do attitude, proactive work style and excellent organizational skills and work-ethic.

  • Legally able to conduct internship in Indonesia

Internship Terms

This is a paid internship program. Intern will actively participate on the program activities and entitled for a compensation on monthly basis.
