About The Company
We're the rain on the roof in a movie. The music flowing through your earbuds when you're at the gym. The footsteps lurking behind you in a video game. The voice of a colleague on a call who seems to be right next to you. The sight of a breathtakingly bright and vivid sunset on your TV. Making experiences come alive through technology is what we do. It's been our mission since day one. It began with our founder, Ray Dolby, a visionary scientist and inventor. As a young engineer and music lover, he was driven to improve the listening experience. And with that simple motivation, plus countless hours of experimentation, he created a solution—a solution that was elegant and practical, highly sophisticated, and wholly devoted to the artist's vision. Even as we've become a global company, Dolby Laboratories continues to reflect Ray Dolby's values. Here, science meets art. And high tech goes far beyond computer code. Founded in 1965 and headquartered in San Francisco, Dolby has grown into a leading global innovator and developer of audio, imaging and voice technologies for cinema, home theaters, PCs, mobile phones, and games. Our products include Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, Dolby Voice, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Today, over 2,000 individuals around the globe share their talents and energy to enable the most immersive experiences that technology can deliver.
About the Role

Who Are You
You are a PhD student at an Australian university, currently residing in Australia, and graduating after September 2026.

We Are
Dolby’s Advanced Technology Group in Sydney creates cutting-edge audio, video, and multimodal technologies that drive next-generation experiences.

Our interests are broad — interactive media using Machine Learning/AI, data science of media, cloud implementations of media processing and delivery, and explorations of audio-video content creation for immersive media such as XR.

In this internship, you will spend four months with Dolby Australia researchers to investigate a cutting-edge topic. We will work with you in the first two weeks of the project to refine the research topic and develop a plan that leverages your competencies to produce novel research that is fun and exciting. We will encourage publication of the output of your project in an appropriate conference or journal.

Technical Background

  • AI / Machine learning systems, preferably with application to audio, video, text, and multimedia

  • Multimodal / cross-modal representation learning

  • Trustworthy and explainable AI

  • Generative AI for media creation

  • 3D deep learning (including NeRF, Gaussian Splatting, etc.)

  • Spatial computing for 6DoF multimedia

  • Perceptual and interactive multimedia computing

  • Human-computer interfaces and AI applications

  • Multimodal and immersive audio and video creation

Project Areas

  • Live events or sports

  • Data provenance, attribution, and authenticity

  • Creating and controlling audio, video, textual, or multimedia content

  • Enhancement of education and learning

  • Future devices (e.g., smart glasses and holographic displays)

  • Next-generation experiences in automotive

These points are examples. We are actively looking for new ideas, and if your research project does not fall precisely in the above categories, please still consider applying.

For example, if you are doing a PhD in quantum computing algorithms with AI or a project that involves user interfaces with robots or Internet of Things applications — come tell us about it, because we are flexible!

What the Internship Is About

  • We will work with you and your PhD supervisor to define a project that relates to your PhD.

  • We highly encourage publication of the results of your project.

  • Work closely with Dolby research teams to better understand industry-based research.

  • Where appropriate, hone your skills in AI / machine learning or the appropriate creative tools.

Skills and Specialty Areas
We are interested in PhD research candidates from Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Science, Music Technology, Media Technology, or Media Content Creation.

We are not prescriptive of skill sets, but it is useful if the research intern has ability in using appropriate tools — e.g., a project in machine learning may require programming in Python or MATLAB, or a project in XR creation may use Max/MSP or Final Cut / Logic Pro.

Most importantly, we are looking for the ability to creatively explore and design experiments to uncover new and interesting learnings in media.
