About the Role

Development of a bench test for Minimally Invasive Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Technologies

The Explor! center is an expertise structure independent of manufacturers, dedicated to the rigorous and objective evaluation of medical devices. Located in Bagneux, Explor! integrates a multidisciplinary team that masters the entire value chain, from identifying an innovation to publishing scientific evidence.

The management of diabetes is currently undergoing a technological revolution with the advent of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems. While subcutaneous sensors are standard, the industry is pivoting toward minimally invasive technologies (e.g., microneedle arrays, dermal patches) that aim to reduce patient discomfort while maintaining clinical accuracy. Technologies such as those proposed by Sava Health or One Health Biosensing utilize microneedle arrays or proprietary biosensing patches to measure glucose levels in the interstitial fluid (ISF) of the dermis, rather than the subcutaneous fat.

Evaluating these devices presents a unique metrological challenge. Testing protocols for subcutaneous sensors are not directly transposable to intradermal technologies due to differences in ISF dynamics, skin impedance, and the mechanical interface at the dermal layer. Consequently, there is a critical need to develop a standardized bench test to evaluate these sensors.

This internship focuses on the feasibility phase of creating such a test bench.

The internship is structured into two distinct phases. The position involves a 50/50 split between Explor! Center (Air Liquide, 10 Av. Aristide Briand, 92220 Bagneux) and Itodys (15 rue Jean-Antoine de Baïf, 75013 Paris).

1. Phase I: Comprehensive Literature Review & State of the Art (Months 1-2)

  • Literature Analysis: Conduct a deep-dive review of existing methods for simulating interstitial fluid glucose dynamics in the derm.

  • Technology Benchmarking: Analyze the sensing mechanisms of current minimally invasive CGMs (e.g., enzymatic electrochemical vs. optical).

  • Physiological Modeling: Define the biological parameters that the bench must replicate (e.g., skin permeability, ISF lag time, lag kinetics).

2. Phase II: Technical Architecture & Complexity Analysis (Months 3-6)

  • Propose theoretical designs for the test bench.

  • Identify necessary components: Precision micro-pumps, reference glucose analyzers, and skin phantom materials.

  • Assess the technical complexity regarding the interface between the sensor and the phantom.

  • Identify potential technical bottlenecks (e.g., stability of glucose in the phantom, sensor degradation).
