About the Role

2026 Summer Intern - Cell and Tissue Genomics Oncology

Department Summary

The Cell and Tissue Genomics Oncology group utilizes advanced genomic technologies to investigate the molecular mechanisms underpinning cancer initiation, progression, and drug resistance. This research is critical for identifying novel and differentiated drug targets to treat cancer.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on site.

The Opportunity

  • Join to a highly cross-functional team, engaging in cutting-edge science aimed at delivering transformative medicines to patients. 

  • Develop and implement molecular and cell biology assays to assess the intrinsic immunogenicity of various cancer models.

  • Design experiments utilizing cutting-edge genomic techniques to analyze and track changes in cell state during treatment.

  • Employ bioinformatics and computational approaches for the analysis of complex datasets, converting findings into practical scientific conclusions.

  • Communicate research outcomes effectively through presentations at group and department meetings across various internal functions within Genentech.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Immunology, Cancer Biology, Cell biology, Molecular Biology or related field.

Required Skills: 

  •  
  • Experience in in vitro primary immune cell culture and handling.

  • Proficient in aseptic cell culture techniques.

  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to thrive in a team environment.

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively and concisely.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Strong background in Immunology and T cell Biology is a plus

  • Experience in molecular biology techniques such as lentiviral and/or retroviral transduction is a plus

  • Experience in flow cytometry is a plus.

  • Experience in data analysis using R or Python is a plus.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of  California is $50.00 per hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
