About The Company
Located in Wheaton, Illinois, Cantigny Park is the 500-acre former estate of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, the longtime editor, and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. Robert R. McCormick died in 1955 at age 74. His will established the Robert R. McCormick Charitable Trust and designated Cantigny as a public space for education and recreation. Cantigny Park opened to the public in 1958. It is home to: The Robert R. McCormick Museum, a historic house museum interpreting the life and legacy of the Colonel. Cantigny Gardens, created in 1967 by renowned landscape architect Franz Lipp. Nearly 30 acres of formal gardens, theme plantings, and statuary render exceptional beauty in all seasons. Visitors Center, featuring a popular scale model of the estate, 100-seat theater with welcome film, Le Jardin at Cantigny Park (restaurant and banquet hall), Bertie’s Café and the Cantigny Shop. Education Center, a Prairie-style building opened in 2010 that serves as the hub for more than 300 children’s programs, youth group activities, Golden Oak Club meetings (for seniors), fitness classes, horticulture workshops, art classes and more. Walking Trails (nearly 3 miles) and spacious Picnic Area. Cantigny Golf, designed by Roger Packard and opened for play in 1989. The 300-acre complex includes 27 scenic holes, the year-round Cantigny Golf Academy, the 9-hole Cantigny Youth Links and a full-service clubhouse with dining and banquet facilities.

Cantigny Gardens:

Created by renowned landscape architect Franz Lipp, the twenty-nine acres of formal gardens at Cantigny are a horticultural masterpiece. Cantigny possesses one of the largest display gardens in the Midwest with more than 160,000 annuals, perennials, ground covers and flowering shrubs and trees. Cantigny’s gardens are a source of education, recreation, and inspiration to thousands of visitors annually.


Principal Function:

Work under supervision in assigned Department while participating in the Veteran Internship Program to create a plan for transitioning to the civilian workforce. Furthermore, convene weekly as a veteran cohort to explore garden spaces, acquire new skills via hands-on projects, and participate in small-group sessions aimed at enhancing workplace adaptability and resourcefulness. We are looking forward to welcoming participants to join the program for the 2024 season, anticipated to start mid-May through beginning of August.


Providing Opportunities:

The Veteran Internship Program provides transitioning service members with professional training and hands-on experience in the civilian workforce. The professional development offered throughout the program prepares veterans for a smooth transition into meaningful civilian careers.

  • Veterans will be provided proper training, mentorship, and leadership during the internship.
  • Veterans will have coaching for resume writing, interview skills and learn how to search for employment.

Working Conditions:

This is a Full-Time position, from mid April to the first week of August. May require use of office equipment including computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. The work can be physically demanding and sometimes includes heavy lifting, repetitive motion, and long periods of standing/walking. Proper safety training and gear must always be used due to the nature and environment of the work. This includes wearing proper PPE and completing safety trainings on a pre-determined schedule.

Requirements


Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Veteran status
  • Must be able to provide DD Form 214 with application during application process
  • Must have honorable discharge on form DD214
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills; must be proficient in English
  • Previous computer experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must be able to walk for extended periods of time and be able to lift at least 70 lbs. to just above the waist (dependent on department role)
  • Must find satisfaction in working with the public and possess an outgoing, friendly, courteous, and enthusiastic personality
  • Must be a team player with a willingness to learn
