About The Company
Founded in 1879, the Wisconsin Humane Society has been saving the lives of animals in need for nearly 140 years. WHS is a 501(c)(3) organization and operates animal shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, Kenosha and Brown Counties, as well as a spay/neuter clinic in West Allis. WHS annually serves 40,000 animals. We receive no general government funding and we are not part of any national umbrella organization. As the largest shelter in the state of Wisconsin, WHS offers the following specialized services: --A comprehensive adoption program that matches 10,000 homeless animals with new families; there are no time or space limits for any animals in our adoption program. We receive nearly all the area's surrendered animals, as well as animals from local and state animal control facilities, and animals transferred from other shelters. --Affordable spay/neuter services open to the public at the WHS Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis. --A pet food bank to assist families with pets through tough financial times. --Youth programs --Outreach programming to serve families living in pet resource deserts. --A foster program for animals in domestic violence situations. --Dog training classes for dogs and puppies. --A Wildlife Rehabilitation Center that provides rescue, rehabilitation, and release for 5,000 wild animals annually, at our Milwaukee Campus.

How you’ll impact our mission: 

The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is hiring full-time, seasonal wildlife rehabilitation interns to care for wildlife with the goal of being released back into the wild. The wildlife rehabilitation intern reports to the Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation and the Intern Coordinator at the Milwaukee Campus, where the position is an onsite, on the job learning opportunity. A limited number of paid internship positions are available with start dates beginning between April 1-June1, and end dates between mid-August to October, depending on candidate’s availability. Key accountabilities

  • Limiting stress in captive wild animals
  • Facility sanitation and animal food hygiene
  • Zoonotic disease transmission prevention
  • Formula selection and feeding techniques for orphaned mammals and birds
  • Maintaining accurate animal care records
  • Medicating animals by various routes and basic fluid therapy techniques
  • General release criteria for rehabilitated wildlife
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Available on evenings, weekends and holidays and to work at least 40 hours average per week, working at least 8-hour shifts. 
  • Completed or pursuing undergraduate or graduate coursework in biology, wildlife management or ecology, natural sciences, pre-veterinary, or related fields preferred.
  • Candidates must be up to date on their tetanus vaccinations.
  • Available for the entire 12-week minimum internship period. Due to the seasonal workload, vacation requests cannot always be approved.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated alignment with our mission, people-centered philosophy, and organizational values of compassion, respect, and kindness; innovation; professionalism; equity; and positive approach. 
  • Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work. 
  • Able to successfully meet the physical demands of the job, which include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds and able to work indoors and outdoors in most weather conditions.  

 

Hiring range: $9.00
