PhD Intern - Quantum Chemistry Methods Development

We are seeking a PhD Intern who will focus on  the development of new computational tools computational methods for applications in quantum computing. 

The successful candidate will support the Chemical Physic & Analysis Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), as part of a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional team involving specialists, in theory, materials synthesis, surface characterizations, and spectroscopies. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to collaborate with a diverse range of staff from experimental and theory groups across PNNL. 

The selected candidate will be focused on three objectives in a 10-week summer internship:

• A novel method development for open system dynamics
• An associated quantum algorithm development for fault-tolerant and noisy quantum platforms
• A computational package development for the above method and algorithm

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. 
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Pursuing a PhD in theoretical quantum chemistry and/or physics.
• Completed graduate level quantum mechanics courses.
• Interested in developments in many-body theory and computational package.

Once you meet the three-year residency requirement thereafter, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment. The tier of federal background investigation required to obtain the PIV credential will be determined by job duties at the time you become eligible for the PIV credential.

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. If you are offered a position at PNNL and currently have any affiliation with the government of one of these countries, you will be required to disclose this information and recuse yourself of that affiliation or receive approval from DOE and Battelle prior to your first day of employment.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
