About the Role
Overview

Come build community, explore your passions and do your best work at Microsoft with thousands of University interns from every corner of the world. This opportunity will allow you to bring your aspirations, talent, potential—and excitement for the journey ahead.

At Windows Design, we shape the core operating system—the canvas where billions work, play, and create. At Devices Design, we bring software to life through hardware—Surface, Xbox, peripherals, and new form factors that blend digital and physical. Together, we explore how AI-first, multimodal interactions can redefine what’s possible across software, hardware, and future workflows.

In this role as a Design Intern, you’ll join a startup-style creative lab inside Windows Design—curious, ambitious, and maker-first. We explore emerging technologies early and act as scouts: spotting trends, translating them into opportunities and user scenarios, and demystifying them for teams. Our work spans from adding subtle magic to today’s products to concepting and building entirely new ones that anticipate where the industry is heading. We thrive in 0–1, where ambiguity fuels invention

At Microsoft, Interns work on real-world projects in collaboration with teams across the world, while having fun along the way. You’ll be empowered to build community, explore your passions and achieve your goals. This is your chance to bring your solutions and ideas to life while working on cutting-edge technology.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Build interactive prototypes using web technologies, Windows-native tools, or lightweight XR frameworks to demonstrate new interaction models.

AI as a design material

  • Experiment with LLMs, agents, and related tooling (e.g., MCP, CUA concepts) to understand what’s possible today—and where friction remains.
  • Translate experiments into concrete insights, not just demos.

Tell the story

  • Create a short narrative artifact (video, walkthrough, or live demo) that explains the user problem, the concept, and why it matters—aimed at both design and engineering audiences.

Workflow augmentation

  • Develop small scripts, prompts, or workflows that speed up exploration or make AI experimentation easier for the team.
