Position Title: Public Health Education Intern
Area of Focus: Maternal and Child Health (MCH)
Internship Job Functions: Administrative, Outreach, Data Analysis
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship - experience can be used for academic credit if eligible.
Introduction
The Asian American Health Coalition dba HOPE Clinic is full-time, non-profit, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that serves the uninsured, under-insured, those with limited English proficiency, and low-income patients. HOPE Clinic’s mission is to provide quality healthcare without any prejudice to all people of Greater Houston in a culturally and linguistically competent manner.
Background
Our Health Education team is seeking to spread awareness of the maternal and child health condition by bringing in interested pre- and/or post-baccalaureate students and/or graduates to gain insight into Public Health work and initiatives.
The selected interns will:
- Volunteer a minimum of 4 - 10 hours per week towards learning about and participating in our MCH programs. Our hours are very flexible and accommodating to student scheduling and needs;
- Receive insight into the work of a Health Education Specialist and the public health field;
- Transform academic knowledge into real-world application with mentorship from industry professionals;
- Gain job transferrable skills and experience through assisting with MCH program management and implementation;
- Have the opportunity to practice project management by growing the MCH programs with the Health Education team;
- Learn the intricacies of real-world public health data collection, tracking, and analysis;
- Participate in educational outreach events with our Health Education team, and learn how to effectively outreach and assist patients.
Responsibilities: Public Health Education interns will be assigned tasks related to processing, researching, marketing, and disseminating health education and information. In addition, the intern will be reaching out to members of the community, as well as patients within HOPE Clinic and the Alief area, to facilitate the engagement and enrollment into our MCH programs. Interns will assist with planning and execution of program related management and maintenance tasks.
Requirements
Qualification Requirements:
- Must have an interest in public health, health policy, and/or in a healthcare related field;
- Must submit a Cover Letter (introduction which includes information such as second language, school entity, field of studies, etc.) and Resume;
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills;
- Must be hard working, creative and resourceful in pursuit;
- Must have a passion for addressing inequalities within healthcare, and with specific preference for disparities existing within the maternal and child health field;
- Must be able to commit to hourly requirements of the program for the duration of the internship;
- Must be able to uphold HIPAA standards in regards to patient confidentiality;
- Must sign off and agree to clinic liability forms and waivers;
- Must complete all internship onboarding paperwork, trainings, and orientations.
