Molding Products is a division of Interplastic Corporation and a leading manufacturer of bulk molding compound (BMC) and sheet molding compound (SMC) used in electrical, industrial, and transportation applications. Our materials are engineered to meet high performance, safety, and reliability standards for demanding environments.

The South Bend, Indiana facility serves as Molding Products’ primary manufacturing and R&D location, where product development, testing, and manufacturing teams work closely together to innovate new materials and continuously improve existing formulations. What You’ll Do as an R&D Intern:

As a Research & Development Intern at Molding Products’ South Bend plant, you will support R&D chemists, engineers, and technical teams in developing, testing, and improving composite materials. This internship is designed to provide practical exposure to applied research, laboratory testing, and manufacturing collaboration.


What You Can Expect to Do in This Role:

  • Assist with laboratory testing, sample preparation, and material evaluations.

  • Support product development and formulation improvement projects.

  • Collect, record, and analyze test data to support technical conclusions.

  • Help maintain laboratory equipment, materials, and documentation.

  • Prepare or update technical reports, test summaries, and presentations.

  • Collaborate with R&D, quality, production, and engineering teams.

  • Learn about BMC/SMC materials, composite manufacturing, and material performance testing.

  • Participate in safety training and adhere to laboratory and plant safety standards.

  • Develop professional skills in data analysis, documentation, communication, and problem solving.


What We Are Looking For:

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Interest in research, materials development, or laboratory-based work.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to follow safety procedures and work in a lab and plant environment.

  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, email, etc.).

Preferred (but Not Required):

  • Coursework or lab experience related to polymers, composites, or materials science.

  • Previous internship, research, or technical project experience.

  • Familiarity with lab equipment, testing methods, or data analysis.

  • Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to learn.

Pay Transparency:

Hourly Compensation: $25.00
Hours and schedule can be adjusted based on academic requirements.
