Job Description Summary

Job Description

As a Mechanical Systems Fellow Intern in the Mechanical Components and Systems Lab, you will have a role in advancing the technology readiness level of mechanical solutions that enable the future of flight: sustainable, high speed, and next generation propulsion. You will participate in the design, analysis, and/or assembly of test rigs, test equipment, and test articles that push the state of the art of bearings, gear systems, rotor/stator seals, and rotordynamics.

At GE Aerospace Research, scientists, engineers, and technicians innovate for the future of flight. An internship with us will provide valuable hands-on experience to help you launch your career in industrial research.  Intern assignments are typically for 12-14 weeks; working side by side with experts in the field of mechanical engineering, completing challenging technical projects and applying theoretical knowledge to real-life technical problems.  This program includes seminars on cross-center technology and soft skills development as well as opportunities for networking and showcasing project accomplishments.

Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a full-time Ph.D. degree program in Mechanical Engineering or related disciplines at an ABET accredited university

  • Permanent legal authorization to work in the US is required. This role is restricted to U.S. persons. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.

  • Willing to work at the GE Aerospace Research site in Niskayuna, NY

  • Minimum GPA 3.0 / 4.0 scale

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with the mechanical design of rotating machinery components and/or systems

  • Experience working on multidisciplinary teams to mature mechanical system technologies through conceptual design, detailed analysis, and/or test execution

  • Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques, and material processing selections for rotating machinery

  • Proficiency using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo)

  • Analytical experience, including structural/thermal finite element analysis with ANSYS

  • Excellent academic performance with technical research orientation

  • Ability to adapt to change and willingness to be flexible in a global team environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills, initiative and organization; demonstrated ability working with a team

  • Strong problem solving skills, thorough attention to detail
