About The Company
Our mission is to decrease the trauma of homelessness and domestic violence; and to provide strength-based, family-family focused and culturally-appropriate prevention and intervention services to children, youth, parents, and families; and to increase the strength and effectiveness of HCN’s collaborative efforts. Homeless Children's Network provides comprehensive on-site mental health, family support, community development and education, and early childhood mental health consultation services for homeless children, youth, and their families at emergency, domestic violence and transitional shelters, as well as single room occupancy hotels (SROs), schools, childcare centers, and permanent supportive housing sites.

Social Media Intern 

Organization: Homeless Children’s Network (HCN)
Location: Remote / Hybrid (San Francisco preferred)
Duration: 10–12 weeks (flexible)
Time Commitment: 10–15 hours per week (flexible)
Compensation: Unpaid; academic credit available if applicable


HOMELESS CHILDREN’S NETWORK MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Homeless Children’s Network (HCN) is to decrease the trauma of homelessness and domestic violence for children, youth, and families; to empower families, and to increase the effectiveness of collaborative efforts among service providers to end homelessness and poverty.

Homeless Children's Network is a community-based organization providing mental health and family support services to children and families who are homeless and formerly homeless.


POSITION SUMMARY

HCN is seeking a Social Media Intern who is passionate about storytelling, social justice, and community impact. This internship is designed as a learning opportunity for individuals interested in nonprofit communications, digital media, and mission-driven work.

The intern will support HCN’s communications team by assisting with content creation, campaign support, and social media planning—while gaining hands-on experience and mentorship.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Draft social media captions and content ideas for Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Assist with creating graphics and short-form videos using templates
  • Support content calendars and campaign planning
  • Research trends, hashtags, and best practices in nonprofit social media
  • Help amplify HCN programs, events, and impact stories
  • Compile basic analytics and insights for learning purposes
  • Participate in check-ins and feedback sessions


LEARNING OUTCOMES

Interns will gain experience in:

  • Social media strategy and content planning
  • Ethical storytelling in community-based work
  • Brand voice and audience engagement
  • Working within a mission-driven organization


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current student or recent graduate (communications, marketing, media, social work, or related fields encouraged)
  • Strong interest in social impact and community-centered work
  • Familiarity with Instagram and other social platforms
  • Basic design or video editing skills (Canva, CapCut, etc. a plus)
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to receive feedback and learn collaboratively


SUPERVISION & SUPPORT

  • Intern will report to a designated HCN Communications Specialist 
  • Regular feedback and mentorship provided
  • Portfolio-ready work encouraged
  • Letter of recommendation available upon successful completion
