Are you passionate about human space exploration, understanding the origins of the universe, and working with a passionate and diverse team to make a difference? If you are, we need you!
We need your talent, teamwork, and energy to help us achieve great things that inspire people all over the globe. We need you to bring creative ideas and diverse backgrounds to help us envision, shape, and deliver systems that will enable the exploration of space while benefiting people here on Earth. We are excited about what we do, and we need you on our team as we take on exciting challenges for NASA’s pursuits in deep space exploration. As NASA’s largest engineering solutions provider working together with NASA at centers across the United States.
We are seeking a Spring 2026 Internship - AI and Astronaut Physiology to join the Human works Lab, with a focus on Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. The selected intern will support the development of AI and machine learning models designed to enhance NASA's understanding of the human body in space. This work will contribute to the optimization of fitness and conditioning systems, as well as overall astronaut well-being.
The lab possesses a substantial repository of data to support the development of AI and machine learning models. During this internship, the focus will be on exploratory data analysis, data provenance, and data curation—including the identification and handling of outliers—to produce clean, well-organized, and reliable datasets. These efforts are essential to facilitate the development of robust models and to support more accurate forecasting and protocol design aimed at sustaining physical and psychological performance in long-duration space missions.
This is a temporary role not to exceed 12 weeks.
The selected candidate will:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive database by integrating existing datasets and organizing newly acquired data.
- Apply scientific methods to classify, clean, and pre-process data to ensure consistency and usability.
- Support the design and implementation of protocols for ingesting new data streams.
- Create Python-based software tools for data analysis and visualization, including the development of interactive dashboards for efficient dataset navigation.
- Develop supplementary software artifacts to enhance data interpretation and presentation.
- Prepare clear and thorough documentation, technical reports, and user guides.
- Collaborate with NASA personnel, cross-functional teams, and departments to gather requirements and communicate findings.
- Adhere to established guidelines, protocols, and best practices in all project tasks.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the project's objectives.
Requisition Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled at an accredited university.
- Completed at least 45 credit hours.
- Minimum of 2.8 GPA.
- Foundational knowledge of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
- Comfortable working in a Linux environment.
- Proficient in Python and commonly used libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and scikit-learn.
- Familiarity with data storage and retrieval systems, including SQL and file formats like Apache Feather.
- Self-motivated team player with the ability to adapt in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Results-driven and committed to completing assigned tasks on time.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage tasks effectively with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Experienced with collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Webex.
Requisition Preferences:
- College Junior or Senior working towards a BS in Computer Science or equivalent.
- Courses in databases, data structures, scientific computing and data science.
- Interest in NASA and Space Exploration
- Experience in Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning through college coursework or work experience.
If you're ready to contribute to groundbreaking work at NASA while expanding your skills in data science and AI, we encourage you to apply and be part of our mission.
