About the Role

Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis at Aalto University School of Science is looking for

interns for the summer of 2026.

A summer internship includes research under the supervision of a professor or a lecturer. The department’s research areas are as follows:

  • Algebra and Discrete Mathematics
  • Analysis
  • Mathematical Physics
  • Mathematical statistics and data science
  • Mathematics & Arts
  • Numerical Analysis
  • Systems and Operations Research

More information on the professors, lecturers and their research groups: https://math.aalto.fi/en. If agreed upon in advance, the results of the internship can be reported, e.g., as a bachelor’s thesis or a special assignment. Many topics can also be continued toward a master’s thesis.

Summer trainees are expected to have completed the first two years of their bachelor’s studies or to have acquired sufficient knowledge in some other way. An internship typically runs from the beginning of June until the end of August. The salary is 2223 €–2445 € per month depending on the intern’s level of education.

The free-form application must include

1)     Preferred topics for the summer internship. It is recommendable to give a priority list of several topics. A list of topics can be found here: https://math.aalto.fi/en/current/summer_trainees. If you list the general topic of the department (topic 1), please also indicate in your application under which professor or lecturer you would like to complete your summer internship.

2)     Description of previous (summer) employment at the department.

3)     Optimal start and end dates for the internship. A summer internship typically lasts for three months. A six-day vacation must be taken during the summer, preferably in July.

The summer interns are selected based on their academic merits, suitability of their studies, other relevant skills and possible interviews.
