About The Company
Continuing Medical Education (CME) is a division within the College of Medicine with the University of Saskatchewan. CME is a leader in enhancing the patient's quality of health through its innovative educational opportunities in lifelong learning. CME offers continued learning through online courses, virtual and in-person conferences, and partnered programs. CME also provides event services to assist with the planning and organization of events. Event Accreditation helps organizing committees stay on track with all the elements required by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada for an event to be claimed for study credits by your learners. The Division of CME is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME). As such we can help you accredit your event for specialists for the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and for Family Physicians though the Mainpro+ program.

Are you passionate about turning data into insights? Join our Reporting and Data Systems team as a Business Intelligence Intern and gain hands-on experience in data engineering, visualization, and data analytics. You’ll work on meaningful projects that support decision-making across the organization while learning cutting-edge tools and best practices.

Primary Purpose: Support the migration of USask’s on-premises data warehouse to Microsoft Fabric, a cloud-based business intelligence solution.

Nature of Work: The Business Intelligence Intern will collaborate with the Reporting and Data Systems team to understand information needs and reporting requirements. This role involves hands-on technical work, including sourcing data, developing transformation logic, and building advanced Power BI reports. The intern is expected to take initiative in learning business rules, processes, and workflows to ensure accurate and meaningful reporting. Additionally, they will share knowledge, follow best practices to maintain consistency, and contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Report and Dashboard Development

Design and build reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using tools such as Microsoft Fabric, SQL, Report Builder and Power BI. Apply best practices in data visualization to present complex information in a clear and intuitive way.

  • Data Engineering
    • Develop and test extract-transform-load (ETL) processes to integrate data into the institutional data warehouse, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
  • Data Governance and Security
    • Adhere to data governance policies and security standards. Implement measures such as access controls, encryption, and data masking to safeguard sensitive information.
  • Documentation
    • Create and maintain documentation for custom tasks, procedures, and services to support knowledge sharing and continuity.
  • Communication
    • Provide regular updates to your manager and team regarding progress, challenges, and new opportunities.
  • Continuous Learning
    • Stay informed about emerging trends and technologies in business intelligence. Participate in training and development opportunities as directed.
  • Additional Duties
    • Perform other related duties or projects as assigned.

Education:

Enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan Computer Science Professional Internship Program (CSPIP) is a requirement.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working in a team environment
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
  • Familiarity with SQL and database technologies such as SQL Server and experience with Python are an asset
