Are you interested in learning how to make positive social change? AARP strengthens communities and promotes the issues that matter most to families, including health and financial security. AARP NJ seeks a Community Outreach Intern to work this spring and through December 2026. This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with AARP leadership, community partners, and volunteers to directly contribute to AARP NJ’s local community impact strategy and work. On any given day, you could support volunteer recruitment and training efforts, create presentations and communications collateral to engage volunteers and communities, support the outreach team through coordinating event logistics, and participate in voter engagement work. We’ll challenge you to think and work in new ways, and we are committed to your growth, continued learning, and development. This paid internship has an anticipated start date of Spring 2026 and will go through the end of the year, with the possibility of extending additional semesters.
Responsibilities
- Apply innovative thinking and problem-solving to community impact work and challenges
- Develop in-depth knowledge of issues; contribute to data analysis, gather information, and research topics
- Develop presentations, collateral materials, and talking points for community engagement events
- Active in volunteer engagement, including supporting volunteer-led projects and programs
- Create content and manage the distribution of a bi-weekly volunteer newsletter
- Interact with members, volunteers, and the public, and provide logistical support at virtual and in-person AARP NJ events
- Attend and participate in community stakeholder conferences, meetings, and forums
- Manage and maintain inventory of collateral materials and giveaways
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university, be considered a graduate student, or a post-doctoral student, and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship
- Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities
- Ability to work well with diverse populations, including gender, race, and sexual orientation

Compensation and Benefits
The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
