About the Role

Join Our Team as an Automation Electrical Design Co-op Student at Johnson Electric!

Location: Ancaster, ON (Onsite)
Duration: 8 months Co-op Term

As our next Automation Electrical Designer Co-op, you’ll be at the forefront of designing, developing, and guiding all aspects of electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery. Your expertise in electrical engineering and control systems will be crucial in driving our success and pushing the boundaries of automation.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Ensure compliance with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and Johnson Electric policies.

  • Design and develop electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery.

  • Test and troubleshoot PLCs and HMIs.

  • Assist with installation, testing, and debugging during machine startups and commissioning.

  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and provide remote assistance for field service.

  • Perform Proof of Concept activities for complex technical issues.

  • Travel to Johnson Electric plants across Canada and the USA to support projects.

  • Collaborate with project management and engineering teams to design automated assembly lines, including presses, CNC upgrades, grinders, and robotic cells.

  • Create and maintain documentation for new and existing equipment.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

What We’re Looking For

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering/Design (Mechatronics, Industrial, or Electromechanical disciplines).

  • Comfortable working in a fixed-term contract role (approx. 8 months).

  • Some experience as Electrical Designer using EPLAN software.

  • Knowledge of CSA, UL, and safety compliance for industrial robot systems.

  • Ability to create and read electrical prints and apply controls design principles.

  • Expertise in System Control and PLC/HMI.

  • Experience commissioning machines (IO Checkout, Ethernet IP setup, Machine Safety setup, troubleshooting).

  • Independent and self-motivated with hands-on experience.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; SolidWorks experience is an asset.

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) across all organizational levels.

  • High integrity, dependability, and results orientation.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
