<h3>The Position</h3><p><u><span><b><span>2026 Summer Intern - Infectious Diseases and Host-Microbe Interactions (Antibiotic Discovery)</span></b></span></u></p><p></p><p><span><b><span>Department Summary</span></b></span></p><p></p><p><span><span>The Department of Infectious Diseases and Host-Microbe Interactions at Genentech seeks to deliver novel therapeutics for gram-negative bacterial infections by leveraging microbiological and computational techniques.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span><span>This internship position is located in</span><b><span> South San F</span></b><b><span>rancisco, on-site. </span></b></span></p><p></p><h2><span><b><span>The Opportunity</span></b></span></h2><ul><li><p><span><span>The Department of Infectious Diseases and Host-Microbe Interactions is seeking a rigorous, creative, and highly motivated individual to join our research group as part of the Genentech internship program. </span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>This position entails working with scientists across multiple departments to advance our understanding of how antibacterial molecules interact with pathogenic bacteria. </span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to leverage microbiology, molecular biology, and computational approaches to interrogate gram-negative antibacterial molecules. </span></span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><span><b><span>Program Highlights</span></b></span></p><ul><li><p><b><span><span>Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship. </span></span></b></p></li><li><p><b><span><span>Program start dates are in May/June 2026. </span></span></b></p></li><li><p><span><span><b>A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. </b></span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects. </span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry. </span></span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><span><b><span>Who You Are </span></b></span></p><p></p><p><b><b>Required Education: </b></b>M<span><span>ust be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student). </span></span></p><p></p><p><b><b>Required Majors: </b></b><span><span>Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology or a related field. </span></span></p><p></p><p><span><b><span>Required Skills: </span></b></span></p><ul><li><p><span><span>Basic microbiology method (growing bacteria, sterile culture techniques), molecular biology skills (one or more of these skills; cloning/plasmid construction/ genetics/RNAseq/sequencing/transcriptomics/QPCR). </span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Genetic Engineering of Bacteria, i.e. combinatorial genetics, and/or plasmid construction.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Proven track record of experimental design, innovation, and interpretation of results as evident by presentations, collaborations, and/or peer-reviewed publications and a passion for learning, developing, and growing as a scientist.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Documentation of data and experiments, as well as oral presentations in small and large group settings.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Ability to interact with scientists from different areas of expertise and to communicate professionally.</span></span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><span><b><span>Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications </span></b></span></p><ul><li><p><span><span>Experience culturing BSL2 level bacterial strains, in chemistry and/or computational approaches is a plus but not required. </span></span></p></li><li><p><span>Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.</span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><b><b>Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. </b></b></p><p></p><p><span>The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California </span><span>is $46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
