Job Description:

The opportunity

The energy landscape is changing rapidly, requiring complex and highly reliable power distribution systems. Emerging technologies integrate renewable energy sources and drive electrification in industry and transportation. Power electronics play a key role in this transformation. Our R&D team for Semiconductor Packaging and Reliability at the Hitachi Energy Research Center is looking for an intern to investigate the reliability of mission-critical power electronic boards and understand their failure mechanisms. You will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team that provides guidance and support throughout the project. If you have strong technical skills, a passion for innovation, and a goal-oriented mindset, this is your chance to contribute to a sustainable energy future. The internship duration is 6 - 12 months.

How you'll make an impact

  • Conduct reliability tests on mission-critical power electronic boards as well as components and identify failure modes

  • Build and upgrade test electronics and data acquisition software needed to run high-precision for long-term measurements

  • Propose innovative solutions for gathering more insights from the experimental tests (e.g. implementing a sensor array)

  • Perform root cause analysis to understand component degradation mechanism and physics of failure

  • Document and communicate the solutions developed, to disseminate the gained knowledge within the team and the company

Your background

  • Currently pursuing an M.S. degree in electrical engineering, physics, materials engineering, or a related discipline (official proof of enrollment is essential)

  • Familiar with the design and construction of electronic systems, data acquisition, and automation tools

  • Hands-on experience and familiarity with lab work, including the use of relevant equipment and techniques

  • Experience with LabView programming and knowledge of programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C) as well as a basic understanding of power electronics

  • Fluency in English, written and spoken

  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills, combined with strong motivation and a proactive willingness to learn
