Job Purpose

Our distinctive excellence is the ability to innovate and quickly deliver optimized solutions for our customers' unique powering challenges in the Telecom, Cable Broadband, Traffic, Security, Industrial and Renewable Energy industries. 

As a result of our continuing growth, Alpha Technologies Ltd. is looking for a MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CO-OP to join the Advanced Development Team in our Burnaby location. The successful candidate will assist the team in improving the thermal design of our products and develop simulation tools/models to reduce the time to market for New Product Introductions (NPI).  The candidate will work with the cross functional advanced development team along with other key stakeholders to create innovative solutions, perform detailed thermal analysis, and capture performance and feedback to influence the direction of future product development.  The position is for a 4 month term, with the possibility of extension.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of compact thermal models of electronics components
  • Validate thermal models using both CFD and real-world testing
  • Develop thermal design tools 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional development teams to validate different design options based on analysis and real-world performance data
  • Assist with innovative power solutions testing and validation for customer applications
  • Prepare technical documentation, application notes, and reports of analysis and testing performance

Qualifications

  • Student actively enrolled in a Bachelor or Masters of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or equivalent program
  • Strong fundamental knowledge in Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, and Thermodynamics.
  • Experience with lumped element analysis or other compact thermal modeling techniques
  • Knowledge of data analytics and statistics is an asset
  • Familiarity with MATLAB and Python
  • Familiarity or experience with mechanical design and CFD tools such as Solidworks or Ansys. 
  • Experience with thermal management of power electronics, magnetics components, Heat Exchangers, and power supplies/systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills
