Asia General Account Investments is the investment function for Manulife’s Asia Segment Life Insurance assets. The General Account Investments team manages assets across a range of asset classes directly, manages allocations across asset classes and oversees assets outsourced to Manulife Investment Management investment desks. At Manulife we have a strong history of investment management expertise and capability, driven by the collective capabilities of the Manulife Investment Management public markets and private markets and General Account Investment desks combined.

We offer the Co-op program for student interns to support COO Office or Finance & Business Advisory or Investment Management on a full-time basis for 6 months. Please indicate your preferred stream in your cover letter.

Position Responsibilities:

COO Office

  • Provide technical & analytical expertise and effective task-oriental support for General Account Investments Asia front office.
  • Create diagrams to capture investment processes and associated data flows.
  • Use VBA/Power Flatform to automate manual processes.
  • Maintain and support investment tools & self-serve reports built by COO.

Finance & Business Advisory

  • Assist team with legal entity financial reporting reviews, board report production and billing.
  • Perform financial analysis and data retrieves to create useful deliverables for management.
  • Support various finance enhancement activities, including onboarding to Anaplan budgeting platform, expenses analysis and tracking etc.
  • Contribute to implementation of new processes/systems with automation opportunities to create operational efficiencies and reporting enhancements.
  • Opportunity to gain understanding of business infrastructure of this investment group and learn the portfolio structure to assist with portfolio onboarding and review.
  • Support on a range of General Account Investments related projects directed by team leads.

Investment Management

  • Support market research and data analysis to support new strategy development and asset allocation decision
  • Help with overall investment portfolio management, monitoring, reporting, and performance evaluation
  • Help prepare regular investment reports for the investment committee, ALCO and board meeting.  Proposing improvements to enhance the reporting process
  • Support market research and data analysis support on the development of strategic asset allocation framework across multiple segments with varying liabilities characteristics
  • Support markets fundamental and technical analysis across global markets and asset classes to support tactical asset allocation decision
  • Monitor investment portfolio activities, risk exposures, ensure compliance against internal and external guidelines and propose mitigating actions
  • Monitor the performance of investment portfolios and fund managers, perform attribution analysis, and recommend corrective actions
  • Support ongoing portfolio optimization initiatives including the introduction of new asset classes, strategies, and derivatives solutions
  • Support ongoing regulatory investment and reporting requirements such as on RBC, IFRS17, and ESG

Required Qualifications:

COO Office

  • Undergraduate with a major in finance, economics, computer science, math, or a related field.
  • Internship experience in financial service industry.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in financial modelling and data analysis.
  • Highly developed computer skills using MS Excel, Visual Basic for Applications, Python, Power BI, and SQL.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to deal with stakeholders from different backgrounds.
  • Experience in Investments / Treasury / ALM / Risk Management a definite asset.

Finance & Business Advisory

  • Undergraduate with a major in Accounting, Finance, Business or related disciplines
  • CA/CPA or equivalent professional accounting qualification is desired
  • Internship experience in asset management or financial services industry is beneficial
  • Knowledge of financial reporting & analysis, finance transformation, IFRS, local Asia GAAPs, US GAAP standards and capital regimes are an asset
  • Adeptness in usage of computing technology including Microsoft Power point presentations, Excel (knowledge of advanced formulas, pivots, macro/ VBA knowledge, Alteryx, Anaplan) and other systems
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work productively with multiple parties at all different levels in the global organization
  • Sound analytical and organizational skills are highly valuable
  • Ability to work adaptably and independently within the growing business

Investment Management

  • Undergraduate graduate with a major in finance, economics, or business administration or Master of Finance, Economics, Accounting or related subjects
  • Strong academic achievement
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting, financial or investment, strong analytical techniques
  • Familiarity with a variety of financial products and services    
  • Agile, creative and show initiative while working in a challenging and fast paced environment 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills 
  • Solid computer experience in Office with a strong aptitude for learning new software packages 
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Result oriented
