About The Company
MassDEP serves the Commonwealth by protecting natural resource areas that involve water, land and air. MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. MassDEP enforces environmental laws, provides technical assistance to cities and towns, issues permits and licenses for activities near sensitive resources, inspects contaminated site cleanups, and partners with other federal and state agencies, municipal officials and environmental stakeholders.
About the Role

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Massachusetts State Lottery Commission ("MSLC") Summer Internship Program provides emerging leaders with the opportunity to build a foundational understanding of  career pathways in public service through experiential learning opportunities.

Interns will participate in weekly professional development workshops, mentoring opportunities, and conclude the program with a final presentation to showcase the insights they've developed over the summer. 

JOB SUMMARY

The Compliance & Security Department seeks to prevent or minimize losses by determining and implementing the required safeguards and by investigating claims filed by Lottery agents and players of Lottery products. This position will aid the Director of Compliance and Security and Security Investigators in detecting fraud, waste and abuse in all aspects of their investigations and department operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct thorough research on agents, players, businesses, and transactions to identify anomalies and potential fraud.

  • Create, maintain, and optimize databases, systems, and documentation to support fraud investigations and audits.

  • Design and implement algorithms and machine learning models to analyze wagering, claims, and sales data, ensuring compliance and fraud detection across Lottery platforms.

  • Implement statistical and predictive analysis to identify patterns indicative of collusion, tampering, or other fraudulent activity between players, agents and other actors.

  • Develop anomaly detection systems and dashboards for real-time fraud monitoring and reporting.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Compliance & Security.

SCHEDULE

This is a full-time paid internship from June 1, 2026 - August 28, 2026. Program dates can be flexible based on the selected candidate's school schedule.

This internship is hybrid eligible. The hybrid schedule requires a minimum of 2 days/week in the Dorchester office. One of those days must be either a Monday or a Friday. Additional in-person days may be required for training, meetings, team projects, or events.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current undergraduate or graduate students in fields such as Data Science, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Business, or related finance and technology studies.

  • Understanding of compliance requirements, anti-counterfeiting measures, and encrypted data controls.

  • Prior experience in office, analytics, or data-intensive environments.

  • Familiarity with data analytics tools (e.g., Python, R, Tableau, Power BI) and machine learning frameworks.

  • Knowledge of fraud detection methodologies, including anomaly detection and predictive modeling.

  • Ability to ensure strict confidentiality and manage sensitive data related to investigations and Lottery operations.

  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate, prioritize, and manage complex data and multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent time management and attention to detail to meet deadlines and regulatory requirements.

  • Capable of communicating effectively with all inter-departments and represent the Lottery in a professional manner.

  • Proficiency in cybersecurity principles, including data encryption, access control, and intrusion detection.

The hourly rate for undergraduate students is $22.

The hourly rate for graduate students is $24.
