Network Software Engineering Intern resides in the Future Infrastructure Group at CableLabs. This department drives research and development activities focused on future access network technologies and virtualized infrastructure. Our team plays a crucial role in delivering software and infrastructure innovations that benefit the cable industry, with particular emphasis on Network Evolution, Platform Evolution, Reliability & Experience and Differentiated Services.

This internship offers the opportunity to build and work with APIs that sit on top of real-world networks, help automate and streamline network configuration, and explore how AI and MCP-based approaches can enhance network operations. Your contributions will directly support the evolution of smarter, more programmable network platforms.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and test APIs that expose network capabilities and data
  • Help automate and streamline network configuration and workflows
  • Prototype and evaluate AI and MCP tools that sit on top of network platforms
  • Document designs, experiments, and findings to support broader team adoption

Qualifications


What Is a Must Have

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, Computer Engineering, Management of Information Systems, or a related field
  • Programming experience in Python, Javascript, or similar languages
  • Familiarity with REST-based APIs and basic networking concepts (IP, TCP/UDP, HTTP)
  • Experience using Linux environments
  • Interest in networking, software systems, or network automation
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and work effectively on a team

 

What Will Set You Apart

  • Experience building or consuming APIs for infrastructure or network services
  • Familiarity with containers, docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift
  • Experience experimenting with AI/ML tools, LLMs, or MCP-style architectures
  • Interest in network observability, telemetry, or automation frameworks
  • Prior internship, or project experience related to networks or distributed systems

 

Working conditions and physical requirements

This job operates in a professional office environment. Working conditions for office environment typically involve indoor settings, often with a mix of standing, sitting, and walking, along with the use of hands and fingers to operate computer equipment. Office workers also need to communicate through various means, including telephone, email, and in-person discussions, and they may be subject to moderate noise levels from office equipment.
