About the Role

Position: Intern - Engineering

Company: OptiGrate – IPG Photonics

Location: Oviedo, FL (2 miles from UCF)

Position type: Student internship, ~20hr/wk (minimum engagement - 6 months)

Desired Education Level: Current UCF juniors or seniors pursuing a technical degree. Preference will be given to students majoring in Material Science, Analytical Chemistry, or Optical Materials.

 

Job Description


The intern will join the Research and Development Glass Laboratory and assist with characterization of production and experimental glass materials. The position is focused on collecting, organizing, and automating analysis of data obtained from analytical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with characterization of glass and optical materials in an R&D laboratory environment
  • Collect, organize, and maintain data from multiple analytical systems
  • Develop simple programs or scripts (preferably in Python) for automated data analysis, such as:
    • determination of glass transition temperatures from DSC data
    • automated decomposition and analysis of optical spectra
  • Maintain experimental sample inventory and basic documentation
  • Support laboratory operations, including assistance with equipment maintenance and ordering supplies
  • Perform hands-on laboratory work with glass samples and powder chemical materials

Required Qualifications

  • Pursuing undergraduate degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Optics, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of glass and/or optical materials and their characterization
  • Ability to write simple data-processing programs (Python preferred)
  • Basic analytical and organizational skills; experience with Excel
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory environment


The intern will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with analytical and optical characterization systems, including thermal analysis, X-ray–based methods, spectroscopic and other optical characterization tools used in glass R&D.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22C.F.R. §120.15 are required. "US Person" includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee. License exception Technology and software under restriction (TSR) defined in 15 CFR 740.6 may permit person from Country Group B.
