About The Company
Cytokinetics is a late-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing first-in-class muscle activators and next-in-class muscle inhibitors as potential treatments for debilitating diseases in which muscle performance is compromised and/or declining. As a leader in muscle biology and the mechanics of muscle performance, we are developing small molecule drug candidates specifically engineered to impact muscle function and contractility. Proud to be a San Francisco Business Times Best Place to Work in 2021 and 2022, a Great Place to Work-Certified company in 2022 and a part of Fortune's Best Workplaces in the Bay Area in 2022 and Fortune's Best Workplaces in BioPharma in 2022.
About the Role

Cytokinetics is a specialty cardiovascular biopharmaceutical company, building on its over 25 years of pioneering scientific innovations in muscle biology, and advancing a pipeline of potential new medicines for patients suffering from diseases of cardiac muscle dysfunction.

At Cytokinetics, each team member plays an integral part in advancing our mission to improve the lives of patients. We are seeking tenacious, compassionate, and collaborative individuals who are driven to make a positive impact.

The Biology Technologies Intern will support research efforts focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) by characterizing disease-associated myosin mutants. This internship provides hands-on experience using biochemical and biophysical techniques to study how specific mutations affect protein structure, stability, and activity. The intern will contribute meaningful experimental data that informs Cytokinetics’ drug discovery and development programs in cardiovascular disease.

This is an onsite internship. Candidates must be able to work in person at the South San Francisco office.

Responsibilities

  • Express and purify myosin protein constructs using multiple techniques (affinity, ion exchange, SEC)

  • Assess protein purity, stability, and activity using SDS-PAGE, Intact MS, and thermal stability assays (nanoDSF).

  • Evaluate compound binding and stabilization effects using methods such as Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC).

  • Maintain accurate experimental records and contribute to data analysis and interpretation.

  • Participate in team meetings and provide regular project updates.

  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation summarizing research findings.

Qualifications

  • Have completed at least two to four years at a US college or university at the time of the program.

  • Seeking a BS degree in biochemistry and/or related fields.

  • Prior coursework in biology/biochemistry/lab courses or have lab experience required.

  • Prior experience with protein purification preferred.

  • Must be detail oriented and have a proactive attitude in support of research activities and running assays.

  • Highly focused, organized and motivated team player with good time management skills.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to troubleshoot problems with team members.

  • Experience in data analysis and/or presentation.
