The Mid-America Regional Council is a nonprofit association of city and county governments and the metropolitan planning organization for the bistate Kansas City region. About the Role

STUDENT INTERN – SOLID WASTE 

The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is seeking a creative, organized and enthusiastic individual to serve as an intern for the Solid Waste Management District. Applicant must be a student, either currently enrolled or seeking enrollment for a formal degree from an educational institution.


ABOUT US

For more than two decades, MARC has been at the forefront of environmental protection efforts in the Greater Kansas City region through established innovative planning and policy programs in the air, water, solid waste and emerging energy sectors. Staff from these programs work with local governments, the EPA, the respective environmental protection agencies in both Kansas and Missouri, the private sector and the public to preserve and protect our region’s most valuable natural resources and to ensure that communities and individuals incorporate sustainable practices in both their current and future plans and activities.


ABOUT THIS POSITION

This position will be involved in data management, project analysis, outreach activities, and event support. 

The Solid Waste intern may work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and full or part-time in the summer. Scheduling will be flexible, but all work must be performed in-person at the MARC offices. Provided sufficient funding, and the intern’s continued enrollment as a student, the internship may be extended into the next school year.

What you’ll do

  • Update website records and information.
  • Perform outreach activities such as tabling, contacting outside organizations, and preparing and delivery of outreach materials.
  • Analyze solid waste programs and projects from a user perspective. 
  • Attend and provide support at solid waste meetings and events.
  • Research data for program improvement.


ABOUT YOU

Skills you’ll need

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with internal staff, citizens, and outside organizations.
  • Analytical abilities to assess programs and projects and provide feedback from a user perspective.
  • Effective writing skills to summarize information accurately and concisely. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
  • Experience in database management.

Basic requirements

  • Current student enrolled in a degree seeking program.
  • Educational and/or past work experience in urban planning, environmental sciences, public administration, public policy, planning, and outreach with an interest in environmental issues.

Additional qualifications

Your resume will stand out if you also have:

  • Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills to effectively interact with internal staff, governmental bodies, the public and outside organizations.
  • Experience in outreach and education programs and activities.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with spreadsheets, word processing software, and Drupal CMS.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to assess programs and projects. 
  • Demonstrated skills in research and data management. 


SALARY AND BENEFITS

Internships are classified as hourly positions with no benefits. Starting salary for this position is $16.00 per hour for undergraduate students and $18.00 per hour for graduate students. MARC offers an attractive team-oriented work environment.
