About the Role
<h3>The Position</h3><h2><u><span><b><span>2026 Summer Intern – Discovery Immunology and Ophthalmology</span></b></span></u></h2><p></p><p><span><span>The Discovery Immunology and Ophthalmology Department at Genentech develops innovative therapeutics to restore, protect, and rejuvenate tissues and organs, with a focus on immune- and vision-related diseases. Working in a highly collaborative environment across Research and Early Development, the department leverages diverse modalities and cutting-edge technologies to translate foundational biology into transformative medicines for patients.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span>This internship position is located in <b><span>South San Francisco</span></b></span><b>, on-site.</b></p><p></p><h2><span><b><span>The Opportunity</span></b></span></h2><p></p><p><span><span>As a Summer Intern, you will contribute to a highly innovative retinal cell therapy project and collaborate closely with researchers across Genentech. Responsibilities include:</span></span></p><ul><li><p><span><span>Designing, performing, and analyzing cell culture experiments to support model development and characterization using molecular biology, imaging, and bioengineering approaches.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Progressively conducting experiments independently and analyzing data to elucidate mechanisms underlying age-related macular degeneration (AMD) biology.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Reading and critically evaluating primary scientific literature relevant to the project.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Actively participating in team meetings, seminars, and scientific discussions.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Preparing a scientific poster and presenting findings in a final departmental presentation.</span></span></p></li></ul><p></p><h2><span><b><span>Program Highlights</span></b></span></h2><ul><li><p><b><b>Intensive </b><b>12-weeks</b><b>, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.</b></b></p></li><li><p><b><b>Program start dates are in May/June 2026. </b></b></p></li><li><p><b><b>A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. </b></b></p></li><li><p><span>Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.</span></p></li></ul><p></p><h2><span><b><span>Required Education</span></b></span></h2><p></p><p><b><b>You meet one of the following criteria:</b></b></p><ul><li><p>Must have attained a Master's Degree.</p></li><li><p>Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).<span><span>​</span></span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><b><b>Required Majors:</b></b><span><span> </span><span>Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, or a related field.</span></span></p><p></p><p><b><b>Required Skills: </b></b></p><ul><li><p><span><span>2+ years of research experience in academic and/or biotechnology laboratory settings.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, demonstrated through poster or oral presentations at regional or national meetings.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Ability to design experiments, troubleshoot technical challenges, and work independently with appropriate guidance.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Highly motivated, proactive, and driven, with a commitment to learning in a new scientific area.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Interest in learning the fundamentals of drug discovery in an industry environment.</span></span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><b><b>Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications</b></b></p><ul><li><p><span>Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.</span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Experience with stem cell culture and differentiation.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Familiarity with bioengineering approaches and/or omics technologies.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Laboratory experience with tissue dissociation, cell sorting, and aseptic technique.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Proficiency in standard wet lab techniques, including pipetting and quantitative measurements.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Experience reading and interpreting scientific literature.</span></span></p></li><li><p><span><span>Strong organizational and time-management skills; familiarity with tools such as Google Calendar, Slack, or similar platforms.</span></span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><b><b>Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. </b></b></p><p></p><p><span>The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California </span><span>is </span><span>$40.00-$46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
