About The Company
Fraunhofer IGD is the international leading institute for applied research in visual computing. Visual computing is image- and model-based information technology and includes computer graphics and computer vision, as well as virtual and augmented reality. In simple terms, the Fraunhofer researchers in Darmstadt, Rostock, and Kiel are turning information into images and extracting information from images. In cooperation with its partners, technical solutions and market-relevant products are created. Prototypes and integrated solutions are developed in accordance with customized requirements. In doing so, Fraunhofer IGD places users at the forefront, providing them with technical solutions to facilitate computer work and make it more efficient. Owing to its numerous innovations, Fraunhofer IGD raises man-machine interaction to a new level. Man is able to work in a more result-oriented and effective way by means of the computer and visual computing developments.
About the Role

Electrosynthesis is becoming increasingly important as the chemical industry seeks more sustainable production methods. Instead of relying on fossil-based processes, it uses electricity – ideally from renewable sources – to drive chemical reactions, offering exciting opportunities for greener and more resource-efficient chemistry.

In this internship, you will model and simulate electrosynthetic processes to understand reaction pathways, optimize catalyst performance, and design more efficient electrode structures. Your work will help accelerate the development of scalable, low-waste, and energy-efficient chemical processes, giving you hands-on experience at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and simulation.

If you are eager to apply your Master’s knowledge to real-world challenges and contribute to a more sustainable chemical industry, join our team and help shape the future of green chemistry!

What you will do

  • Familiarization with the theory and modeling of electrosynthesis
  • Familiarization with the existing OpenFOAM solver
  • Extensions of the model regarding electrochemical reaction mechanisms
  • Meshing complex electrode structures
  • Parameterization of the model using experimental data
  • Performing simulations on high-performance computing environment
  • Performing parameter studies to identify optimal operating conditions and to support the design and improvement of experimental setups.
  • Documentation and presentation of results

What you bring to the table

  • Master studies in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science, or comparable.
  • Fundamental knowledge of OpenFOAM and basic programming skills (C++) are required.
  • Interest in electrochemical processes, energy systems, and their mathematical modeling.
  • Strong communication and writing skills in English.
  • Independent working style and ability to collaborate effectively in a team.

What you can expect

  • A challenging, attractive, interdisciplinary and international working environment
  • The opportunity to implement a mathematical model from theory to practical application
  • Support from experienced scientists
  • Insights into current research on battery storage and hydrogen technologies
  • An appreciative and supportive working atmosphere
  • Opportunities for individual development
  • Flexible working hours thanks to flexitime arrangements
  • Parking spaces, canteen and library on campus
  • ... and much more!
