About the Role

Description


PURPOSE:

Under guidance from process engineering staff, the intern shall participate in the evaluation and documentation of current helmet processing solutions for helmet and auxiliary equipment systems.  The intern shall provide engineering assistance to project/program managers in the coordination and implementation of:

  • Assist in the programming of Fanuc multiaxis robots to perform trimming and sanding operations and optimize automated paint line CO2 cleaning and paint robots.
  • Document the programming process for each operation.
  • Review existing Standard Work Instructions (SWI) and Manufacturing Control Procedures (MCP).
  • Review current final and sub-assembly processes on the production floor.
  • Re-layout and Rewrite SWI and MCP to break down the work content of each assembly station using InDesign for display on video screens in the production cell.
  • Review each SWI and MCP with process engineering staff and upon approval submit the document changes through DCO process.


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review current production processes and standard work instructions.
  • Evaluate the current production processes for improvements in quality, product flow, and/or fixturing utilizing lean single piece flow methodology.
  • Develop iterative programs to support robotic waterjet trim paths and robotic sanding patterns after process engineer develops base program.
  • Document the programming steps required to develop iterative robotic programs.
  • Re-layout and rewrite SWIs and MCPs utilizing InDesign into a format to properly display the work content of each assembly operation on the video screens in each production cell.
  • Process all document changes utilizing current DCO approval process.
  • Be given assignments within teams requiring originality and ingenuity while under Senior Engineering supervision.
  • Be motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment and have demonstrated multi-tasking capabilities.
  • Schedule flexibility to support critical deadlines may be required.  

Requirements


EDUCATION AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LICENSE(s):

An Engineering Intern must have completed at least two years of study in a Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science, or other relevant Engineering B.S. degree program.


EXPERIENCE: 

At least one non-technical position demonstrating work skills, with one technical related work experience preferred.  


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Should have completed class work in the following areas:

  • Computer Aided Design
  • Statics and Dynamics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Mechatronics
  • Differential Equations
  • Chemistry
  • Physics 1 and 2

Should demonstrate knowledge of one or more of the following:

  • Robotics and programming
  • SolidWorks (or similar package)
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Composite Materials
  • Composite Resin Systems

Should have the following skills and abilities:

  • Detail oriented with very good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with good team skills, strong analytical skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Engineering standard practices. 

  

CONTACT WITH OTHERS:

Daily contact with other engineers, managers, purchasing, manufacturing and warehouse personnel.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL/COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The individual must have a high level of comprehension, and a high level of general, verbal, written, and numerical intelligence.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Works majority of the day in a climate-controlled environment, with the exception of or otherwise specified, performing work in the warehouse or manufacturing areas which are subject to changes in temperature and/or noise.


TRAVEL:

Generally, travel is not required.


LOCATION:

Gentex’s Carbondale facility is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania in Lackawanna County. Carbondale, PA is about twenty miles north of Scranton, PA, 50 miles south of Binghamton, NY, and about 125 miles from New York City and Philadelphia. The area hosts numerous nearby state parks, nature preserves and local colleges and universities, including The University of Scranton and Marywood University. Northeast Pennsylvania is a beautiful area and offers an excellent cost of living. It is a great place to work, recreate, meet people, raise a family and live!
