On America's first official "Earth Day" — April 22, 1970, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection was born. New Jersey became the third state in the country to consolidate its past programs into a unified major agency to administer aggressive environmental protection and conservation efforts. Former Governor William T. Cahill appointed Richard J. Sullivan as the first commissioner. Since that day, NJDEP began a role to manage natural resources and solve pollution problems. Program: Air, Energy, & Material Sustainability – Division of Climate Change Mitigation & Monitoring - Bureau of Energy & Sustainability

Program Description: Air, Energy and Materials Sustainability (AEMS) develops and enforces statewide programs, policies, and regulations to reduce air pollution and climate-related emissions, ensure compliance with the New Jersey Air Pollution Control Act, and support clean energy and sustainability initiatives. The unit oversees inspections, licensing, and enforcement related to solid, hazardous, and medical waste management, recycling, underground storage tanks, and vapor recovery systems, working to protect public health, preserve the environment, and enhance quality of life for New Jersey residents.

Project Description: The intern will participate in outreach efforts targeted toward businesses to adopt sustainable business practices. They will work closely with environmental specialists to develop industry-specific guidance.

Specific to the Position: The ideal candidate will be organized, timely, and an excellent communicator.

Preferred Area of Study: Seeking individuals enrolled at an accredited university/college studying one of the Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, or in Environmental Planning, Environmental Policy, Sustainability, Communications, Public Policy, or Physical Geography

License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
