About the Role

Description

Pay Rate: $15 / hour

Hours: This internship will last for a duration of 500 hours worked. We are anticipating approx. 26 hours per week, with some flexibility. The 500 hours should be completed prior to the end of June. Candidates must have daytime in-person availability during the week to complete this internship, though there can be some flexibility on the specific hours. 


Job Summary: 

The Community Engagement and Corporate and Community Fundraising teams (Engagement Team) at Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is an integral facet of the organization’s everyday operations. The Community Engagement Team works to recruit, schedule, and retain more than 8900 volunteers per year to support the Food Bank’s mission. The Corporate and Community Engagement Team works with companies, community members, and organizations to fundraise in support of the Food Bank’s mission. The Food Bank’s Signature Event, Empty Bowls is coordinated by this team.


This intern will help recruit and retain volunteers through virtual and in-person strategies. This position will also help the community engagement team increase their capacity by supporting food drives and third-party events. In preparation of the March 15, 2026 Empty Bowls Dinner, the intern will assist the Community Fundraising Team in preparation for the event. 

Requirements

Key Responsibilities: 

     Volunteer Engagement

  • Raise awareness and develop volunteer pool through the use of various marketing tools including a volunteer database, email blasts and other communications.
  • Coordinate and schedule volunteers on an on-going basis, or a single event, to provide necessary support for the Food Bank.
  • Assist with virtual administrative tasks i.e. updating volunteer signup links for the website through our CRM, and monitoring online scheduling numbers in Salesforce
  • When available, assist with daily tasks such as greeting volunteers, providing a safety speech, restocking supplies, etc. 
  • Support engagement events and Volunteer Appreciation Month (April) activities including potlucks, picnics, social media posts, and special recognition efforts. 

     Community Fundraising and Events

  • Support the Philanthropy Department with planning Empty Bowls, the Food Bank and Just Harvest's annual fundraising event. 
  • Assist Community Fundraising Coordinator in the solicitation of restaurant soup donations. 
  • Assist Community Fundraising Coordinator with soup donation logistics, including scheduling deliveries, ensuring a variety of soup options, and communicating with donors to ensure timely donations.  
  • Collaborate internally with supervisor and coordinators to facilitate successful event logistics.
  • Support food drive drop offs and collection by helping to coordinate food drive drop offs in our agency dock, unloading boxes of food from vehicles, and providing brief tours of the Food Bank to interested food drive donors. 
  • Expand our outreach to enroll new charity runners who support the Food Bank through their participation in the Pittsburgh Marathon. 
  • Assist with updating and creating promotional materials 


Qualifications  

  • Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain positive attitude and work environment; ability to work with a diverse group of people.  
  • Ability to work with communities to engage and recruit volunteers through various channels.
  • Experience working with fundraising or CRM database(s), project management software, electronic calendar.
  • Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint preferred.
  • Experience working with individual, corporate, and community donors in a volunteer setting.
