We are the largest North American producer by volume in the rail and large diameter pipe markets, and we hold leading positions in the Western Canada oil country tubular goods, small diameter pipe and West Coast plate markets.

We are seeking a Automation Intern to join our Pueblo, Colorado team. This individual will learn how to operate in a real mill setting and interact with plant personnel, as well as external suppliers and contractors to execute manufacturing-based projects.

Job Description and Responsibilities

  • Must passionately follow health and safety practices

  • Support and learn from automation engineers in troubleshooting PLC, HMI, Drives (VFD’s) and communication networks

  • Assist in developing, testing, and documenting control logic and process improvements

  • Participate in maintenance and reliability activities related to automation systems

  • Help collect and analyze production data for process optimization

  • Support commissioning and modification of automation system on production lines

  • Maintain proper documentation of control systems, wiring diagrams, and software changes

  • Basic knowledge of how sensors, controllers, and actuators work together (PID's, PWM, etc.)

  • Perform electromechanical diagnostic activity

  • Work with production to implement new equipment

  • Plan and document control system design, test, verification and maintenance documents

  • Maintain good attendance

  • Performs other duties as they might be assigned

Requirements

  • Pursuing a engineering degree, preferable electrical, mechatronic, systems engineering or robotics

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Strong computer skills

  • Ability to quickly learn new software tools and technologies

  • Basic coursework in control systems, instrumentation and electrical circuits, required

  • Previous work or internship in related field, preferred

  • Be curious and eager/open to learning new skills

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding manufacturing environment, which will include inside and outside environmental conditions

  • Must be able to work in-person, onsite

Learning Opportunities

  • Hands-on experience in an industrial automation environment

  • Exposure to large-scale drives, PLC systems and process automation

  • Mentorship from senior automation engineers

Term

  • May - August 2026, following Spring semester

  • Must be onsite in Pueblo, Colorado for the duration of the internship

Compensation

  • Undergraduate/Graduate experience $25.00 - $30.00 per hour

Work Environment

  • Typical administrative / office environment: no exposure to adverse environmental conditions

  • Environmental conditions: protected from weather conditions but not from temperature changes

  • Outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather

  • Hazards: includes such physical conditions, as proximity to moving mechanical parts/vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or to chemicals

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary work: exerting up to 10 lb of force occasionally

  • Light work: exerting up to 20 lb of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lb frequently

  • Medium work: exerting up to 50 lb of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 lb frequently

  • Heavy work: exerting up to 100 lb of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lb frequently, and/or up to 20 lb of force constantly to move objects.
