The California Association of Food Banks is working to create a hunger-free California. Harnessing the voice of our 40+ member food banks of California, we influence public policy, collaborate with local farmers to get fresh food into our food banks, and provide nourishment to millions of food insecure families and individuals.
About the Role
<p>The California Association of Food Banks (CAFB) has a mission to end hunger in California. We partner with 42-member food banks across the state to feed our communities, while also working toward policy and systems change to prevent hunger in the first place.</p> <p>We are seeking one part-time (~20 hours/week) graduate student Data Science Intern to support CAFB’s Research &amp; Strategic Initiatives Department. This position will support the department’s efforts in developing and updating public-facing and internal dashboards visualizing key data such as food bank operation metrics and population health indicators. For an example of our public-facing dashboards, see our Economic Indicators Dashboard&nbsp;<a href="https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/cafb.research/viz/EconomicIndicators_17268626910250/Home">here</a>.</p> <p>This is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their portfolio, build their professional network, receive dedicated mentorship, and contribute to critical anti-hunger, nonprofit work.</p> <p><strong>Responsibilities:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Build, refresh, and enhance Tableau dashboards to support organizational goals</li> <li>Clean, organize, and analyze datasets to ensure accurate reporting</li> <li>Collaborate with staff to understand data needs and improve dashboard usability</li> <li>Assist in documenting data processes and dashboard updates</li> <li>Contribute to ad-hoc data analysis projects as needed</li> </ul> <p><strong>Qualifications:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Coursework or experience in data science, statistics, or a related field</li> <li><span data-teams="true">Experience creating interactive dashboards in Tableau or similar software</span></li> <li>Basic skills in programming languages such as Python and SQL</li> <li>Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform, including tools such as BigQuery</li> <li>Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn</li> <li>Interest in mission-driven, nonprofit work</li> </ul> <p><strong>Compensation:</strong> This position is part-time, approximately 20 hours a week and is paid hourly at $30/hour.&nbsp;</p> <p>A required cover letter should include relevant data science and data visualization experience or training. Please be sure to describe your interest in working at an anti-hunger, nonprofit organization. Our office is based in Oakland, CA but the position can be <strong>remote or hybrid within the state of California</strong>. The student will work on a team consisting of a research director and program manager and collaborate with other CAFB departments. The position is for the Spring semester but may be extended if mutually agreed upon.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
