About the Role
<h3>The Position</h3><p><b><span>2026 Summer Intern - Discovery Immunology</span></b></p><p></p><p><b>Department Summary</b></p><p></p><p><span>In Discovery Immunology at Genentech, our goal is to create life-changing medicines for people living with inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Working in a highly collaborative environment across Research and Early Development, we’re using new scientific approaches to find better ways to treat IBD, joint diseases, and respiratory conditions like COPD.</span></p><p></p><p><span>This internship position is located in <b>South San Francisco, on-site. </b> </span></p><p></p><p><b>The Opportunity</b></p><ul><li><p>Model Development:<span> Design and run cell culture experiments using molecular biology, imaging, and bioengineering to build and characterize new disease models.</span></p></li><li><p>COPD Research:<span> Work toward conducting independent experiments and analyzing data to uncover the biological mechanisms behind COPD.</span></p></li><li><p>Literature Review:<span> Read and critically evaluate scientific papers to stay informed on the latest research relevant to your project.</span></p></li><li><p>Scientific Collaboration:<span> Actively participate in team meetings, seminars, and scientific discussions with Genentech researchers.</span></p></li><li><p>Presentation:<span> Prepare a scientific poster and present your findings to the department at the conclusion of your internship.</span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><b>Program Highlights</b></p><ul><li><p><b><span>Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.</span></b></p></li><li><p><b><span>Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)</span></b></p></li><li><p><b><span>A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. </span></b></p></li><li><p><span>Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.</span><br /><br /> </p></li></ul><p><b>Who You Are </b></p><p></p><p><b>Required Education</b><br />Y<span>ou must meet one of the following criteria:</span></p><ul><li><p><b><b>Must have attained a Master's Degree</b></b></p></li><li><p><b><b>Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)​</b></b><br /> </p></li></ul><p><b>Required Majors:</b><span><b> </b><br />Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, or a related field.</span><br /> </p><p><b>Required Skills:</b></p><ul><li><p>Lab Experience: <span>2+ years of research experience in an academic or biotech laboratory setting.</span></p></li><li><p>Technical Proficiency:<span> Skilled in standard wet lab techniques, including pipetting and quantitative measurements.</span></p></li><li><p>Effective Communication: <span>A track record of sharing your work through poster or oral presentations at regional or national meetings.</span></p></li><li><p>Independence: <span>The ability to design experiments, troubleshoot technical challenges, and work independently with appropriate guidance.</span></p></li><li><p>Driven Mindset: <span>A proactive, motivated approach and a genuine interest in learning the fundamentals of drug discovery.</span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><b>Preferred Knowledge & Skills:</b></p><ul><li><p>Specialized Lab Techniques:<span> Experience with cell culture, differentiation, tissue dissociation, cell sorting, and aseptic technique.</span></p></li><li><p>Molecular & Cellular Analysis:<span> Familiarity with FACS analysis (cell sorting) and RNA-based techniques.</span></p></li><li><p>Advanced Approaches: <span>Familiarity with bioengineering methods or "omics" technologies.</span></p></li><li><p>Scientific Literacy: <span>Experience reading and interpreting primary scientific literature.</span></p></li><li><p>Organization: <span>Strong time-management skills and familiarity with tools like GraphPad Prism, Google Calendar, or similar platforms.</span></p></li><li><p>Values-Aligned: <span>Someone who acts with integrity, shows courage in the face of scientific challenges, and has a passion for helping patients.</span></p></li></ul><p></p><p><b><b>Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. </b></b><br /> </p><p><span>The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of  <b>California </b>is <b>$40.00-$46.00</b> hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
