Compensation
- $18/hr.
- Evening differential $2.50hr.
- Night differential $3.00/hr.
- Weekend differential $3.00/hr.
The Transition to Practice department supports nursing students and new nurses as they embark on a career in professional nursing. This program offers a structured curriculum designed to complement and enhance your professional growth by providing direct observation of a registered nurse’s role within various service line areas.

- Provides basic patient care. {Under the supervision of an RN
- Assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment.{Under the supervision of an RN}
- Provides general nursing care and routine treatments.{Under the supervision of an RN
- Intervenes by providing direct patient care using appropriate judgment and actions in collaboration with the Registered Nurse. {Under the supervision of an RN}
- Interacts with a variety of personnel with diverse backgrounds in education, experience, ability and motivation. [Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse]
- Takes responsibility for continued professional growth and development.
The Nurse Extern Program is a 9-week summer paid externship requiring a commitment of 24 hours per week.
Participants will follow a scheduled rotation with an assigned registered nurse (RN) based on the unit's needs.
Night shifts may be required depending on unit availability.
Participating Areas: Emergency Services, Critical Care, Stepdown Units, Women’s Services, Labor & Delivery, NICU/Nursery, Medical, Oncology, Surgical, Orthopedic, Operating Room
Qualifications
Education
- Must be currently enrolled in an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in nursing and have completed 1 semester.
Experience
- 1 semester of nursing clinicals
- Prefer completion of 2 semesters of Clinical Instruction and have at least 1 semester left in school.
Licensure/Certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) training or re-training is required during orientation prior to providing patient care.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) is required to be maintained thru re-training for duration of employment
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Must remain in good standing with school and remain actively enrolled in current nursing program
- Letters of Recommendation: Provide two letters of recommendation (one must be from an instructor).
- Transcript: Submit an unofficial transcript.
- Upon Hire: Submit the following:
- A copy of your current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Copy of your clinical skill checklist.
- Start date June 1.
