IaaS Software Engineer Intern - Portland, OR (100% on-site)

We’re excited to welcome motivated, forward-thinking students to join our growing teams for Summer 2026. Our paid internships run 100% on-site from May/June through August/September, and all candidates must be actively enrolled students during the program.

Responsibilities

The intern will develop a proof-of-concept automation tool for bare-metal server provisioning workflows. Specifically, they will:
  • Build a Go-based CLI tool that integrates with existing hardware provisioning APIs (Tinkerbell/MAAS).
  • Implement automated validation checks for boot configurations and image deployment status.
  • Create Python test automation using pytest to verify provisioning workflows across different hardware configurations.
  • Document deployment procedures and generate hardware compatibility matrices.
  • Contribute to internal tooling that supports the IaaS platform team's operations.
  • This is a defined project with clear deliverables that complements existing systems without replacing production responsibilities.

What you will get from this experience:

  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code and bare-metal provisioning technologies used in production cloud environments.
  • Practical Go/C/C++/Linux development skills building system-level tooling.
  • Exposure to Linux system administration, boot processes, and hardware management protocols (PXE, IPMI/Redfish).
  • Experience with containerization, CI/CD pipelines (GitLab), and test automation frameworks.
  • Understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems design patterns.
  • Agile/Scrum development practices including sprint planning, code reviews, and working with distributed teams.
  • Mentorship from senior engineers on production IaaS infrastructure.

Qualifications

What We're Looking For:

  • Junior or Senior undergraduate, or graduate student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering.

Required Technical Skills:

  • GO/C/C++ programming
  • Python programming

Bonus Skills:

  • Linux system administration
  • pytest or testing frameworks
  • microservices
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Bash/shell scripting
  • Embedded systems/Raspberry Pi/Micro Controller usage/development
