About The Company
Founded in 1911, the Port owns and operates Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Fishermen’s Terminal — home of the North Pacific fishing fleet — and public marinas. The Port also owns two cruise ship terminals, a grain terminal, real estate assets, and marine cargo terminals through its partnership in the Northwest Seaport Alliance. Port operations help support nearly 200,000 jobs and $7 billion in wages throughout the region. Over the next 19 years, the port’s “Century Agenda” seeks to create an additional 100,000 jobs through economic growth while becoming the nation’s leading green and energy-efficient port.
About the Role

This is a full-time summer internship with the potential to be extended part-time into the school year. Extensions will be reviewed regularly and will be determined based on the needs of the department and project scope. The internship may not exceed one year. As part of the Aviation Environmental Compliance Team, you will support programs associated with contaminated sites, stormwater, and hazardous materials handling and disposal. This program ensures compliance with state and federal laws associated with current and historical uses (and releases) of chemical-containing materials.

  • Coordinate with construction projects for proper identification, handling, and disposal of contaminated materials.
  • Review, summarize and update records of past investigations, cleanups, and spills in the Port’s historical records database.
  • Conduct field visits to locate and inspect stormwater best management practices for condition and operation.
  • Support staff with planning community planting events, invasive species removal efforts, and inspections of Port vegetated areas.
  • Support staff with planning for environmental soil and groundwater investigations.
  • Evaluate field and analytical laboratory data.
  • Coordinate with Port Maintenance Crews for upkeep and repairs to existing soil caps, permeable pavement areas, and stormwater control structures.
  • Support staff with site inspections of materials handling areas.

  • A student – You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) in a degree program such as Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent.
  • Committed to Equity – You will apply equity and exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices in all aspects of the work.  At the Port of Seattle, equity is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all Port employees.
  • Problem Solver – You are driven to solve problems and improve a program.
  • Flexible/Adaptable – You are flexible in an environment with competing tasks and responsibilities. You take into consideration and balance multiple responsibilities and schedules, and can facilitate conversations to identify solutions.
  • Curious – You have a desire to learn about environmental compliance at an operating facility.
  • Observant – You are able to observe and identify details in field conditions and written documents, and retain and communicate information that you observe.
