Leawood, Kansas, a suburban community in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, is located in Johnson County, approximately 10 miles southwest of downtown Kansas City, MO. It covers 14.7 square miles and resembles an elongated rectangle running north/south. Interstate-435 crosses through the City and is just north of the center of the community. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern (Seasonal)

Summary/Objective

Under the supervision of the Asset Management Coordinator, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) intern will assist the Engineering Division of Public Works in utilizing GIS applications to collect and report accurate data in the office and in the field. The internship will allow you to gain on-the-job GIS experience in a municipal Public Works setting. 

  • Work with the Asset Management Coordinator and GIS Specialist, completing geographic information systems-related data collection, GIS layer creation, and map preparation.
  • Work with city staff to enter and maintain data in the City’s Asset Management System, ensuring information is up to date and accurate. May assist with completing physical inventory collection. 
  • Assist the department in maintaining and updating department GPS surveys of roads, storm sewers, traffic signals, and streetlights. 
  • Assist in analyzing GIS spatial and non-spatial data both in the field and office for quality control and quality assurance purposes. 

Education, Training, and Certification Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years in an undergraduate degree or graduate level geographic information systems or related degree program. 
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
