Job Summary

The Student Intern – Healthcare Explorer role provides high school students with structured exposure to healthcare careers within the hospital setting. This position is observational and educational in nature, designed to support career exploration while ensuring patient privacy, safety, and regulatory compliance.

The student intern shadows approved hospital personnel, participates in non-clinical support activities as permitted, and gains insight into various healthcare professions. This role does not provide direct patient care and is not intended to replace regular staff.

Essential Functions

  • Shadows designated healthcare professionals across approved departments to observe daily operations and workflows
  • Participates in structured learning activities designed to provide exposure to healthcare career paths
  • Assists with basic non-clinical, non-patient care tasks as directed (e.g., organizing materials, preparing non-clinical supplies, clerical observation)
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all patient and hospital information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
  • Demonstrates professionalism, punctuality, and appropriate workplace conduct at all times
  • Completes required orientation, safety, infection control, and compliance training prior to beginning shadow activities
  • Complies with all hospital safety, infection prevention, and identification badge requirements
  • Seeks guidance and asks appropriate questions to enhance understanding of healthcare roles and responsibilities

  • Direct supervision required at all times while in clinical areas


Education

  • Current high school student in good academic standing required
  • Minimum age requirement consistent with state labor laws and organizational policy

Licenses/Certifications

  • None required
  • Completion of required organizational onboarding modules (e.g., HIPAA, safety training) prior to start

Experience

  • No prior healthcare experience required
  • Demonstrated interest in healthcare careers preferred
