1. Internship Topic

Private sector development on ASEAN Power Grid (APG) - power wheeling and interconnection capital

2. Summary of Job Description

SERD/ SGO is looking for an intern who will support the ADB ASEAN Power Grid initiative.

The intern will 

  • Support ADB's work on the APG, specifically on 1) developing wheeling charge methodologies for multi-country power trade and 2) pathways to mobilize institutional capital (e.g. insurers, asset managers) for APG projects. 
  • Conduct targeted research, comparative analysis across markets, structured interviews with ADB staff and selected external experts and preparation of outputs for internal use. 
  • Analyze the wheeling charge methodologies applicable to multi-country power trade in ASEAN, which include a comparative analysis with other regional power markets. 
  • Assess the potential financial structures and institutional capital setup to identify an institutional capital framework. Further details of scope and expected outcomes are given in section6 below.

Duration: 11 weeks

Timing: June 2026 onwards

5. Expected Outcomes

  • A clear, evidence-based reference note on wheeling charge methodologies applicable to multi-country power trade in ASEAN, including comparative insights from other regional power markets.
  • A practical framework for mobilizing institutional capital into APG-related projects, mapping specific barriers and identifying potential financial structures or risk-mitigation tools suitable for insurers, pension funds and asset managers.
  • Client-ready research outputs (notes, slides and briefing materials) for use by ADB teams in policy dialogue and transaction preparation.
  • Strengthened internal understanding through structured interviews and knowledge capture from ADB staff and selected external experts.



7. Education Requirements

Currently enrolled in a master's degree program or PhD in economics, energy systems, public policy, development finance, engineering, or a related field with strong analytical training and familiarity with infrastructure or energy markets.

 

8. Relevant Experience and Other Requirements

  • Preferably 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in energy infrastructure and market or in infrastructure economics/finance.
  • Demonstrated interest in energy transition, power markets or infrastructure finance
  • Proven ability to prepare polished, client-ready presentations in PowerPoint
  • Strong research, quantitative and writing skills, with the ability to synthesize complex regulatory and technical information succinctly
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international team, with attention to detail and strategic insight
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
