About the Role

Job Summary:
The Nurse Extern is seeking to specialize in care of the patient. This program is designed to provide the senior nursing student with specific tools and experiences needed to begin a successful career in Nursing. Rotational clinical experiences in each of the clinical areas are designed to give the student exposure to the patient demographic, unit environments and exposure to the healthcare team. This program will assist in identifying individual learning needs, provide opportunities to develop new and specialty competencies and promote self-esteem and confidence in their ability to adjust to the new RN role post graduation. All duties will be performed under the direct observation of a Registered Nurse.

Specialty areas include: Medical-Surgical Inpatient, Emergency Department, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Surgical Services to include Ambulatory Care and Post Anesthesia Care.

The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.

Must be able to communicate effectively and adapt to the constantly changing workload. Assist with various procedures, including but not limited to, activities of daily living, measuring I & O's, cleaning of area and stocking of supplies and equipment, knowledge of sterile procedures. Individual must be able to work with others as a member of the health team. Must be willing to learn and communicate well with patients, families and co-workers. Must have a genuine interest in patients and coworkers as demonstrated by timeliness and working when scheduled; including weekends and holidays.
