About The Company
Fraunhofer IGD is the international leading institute for applied research in visual computing. Visual computing is image- and model-based information technology and includes computer graphics and computer vision, as well as virtual and augmented reality. In simple terms, the Fraunhofer researchers in Darmstadt, Rostock, and Kiel are turning information into images and extracting information from images. In cooperation with its partners, technical solutions and market-relevant products are created. Prototypes and integrated solutions are developed in accordance with customized requirements. In doing so, Fraunhofer IGD places users at the forefront, providing them with technical solutions to facilitate computer work and make it more efficient. Owing to its numerous innovations, Fraunhofer IGD raises man-machine interaction to a new level. Man is able to work in a more result-oriented and effective way by means of the computer and visual computing developments.
About the Role

WE RESEARCH FOR A HEALTHY WORLD – AND OFFER DIVERSE OPPORTUNITIES.
CHANGE STARTS WITH US.

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, we combine biology and engineering for health, nutrition, sustainable chemistry, the environment, and climate protection. We develop processes, technologies, and products for patient-centered healthcare, a sustainable bioeconomy, and a climate-neutral and resource-efficient circular economy, bringing new solutions successfully to industrial implementation. We conduct research at the Stuttgart, Biberach, Leuna, and Straubing sites and in close collaboration with numerous universities and research institutions at home and abroad.

In Straubing, we develop methods to the sustainable green transition to a circular economy in industrial chemical production. Through electrocatalytic power-to-X-to-Y processes, CO2 can be converted into platform chemicals. Bachelor's or Master's theses in our group are involved in the preparation of electrodes and their characterization in electrochemical processes. There is also a focus on upscaling to bridge the gap between laboratory and industrial applications. Topics of interest include electrochemical CO2 reduction and electrochemical upgrading of bio-based compounds.

Be part of change

  • Your tasks include working with electrochemical cells.
  • The evaluation of electrochemical performance is conducted by you.
  • You do literature searches to identify relevant developments and integrate them into your work.
  • You analyze the correlations between raw materials, operating parameters, and production rate.
  • Results are evaluated, discussed, and regularly reported to relevant stakeholders.

What you contribute

  • You are studying chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, physical chemistry, or a related degree program
  • Initial experience or knowledge in electrochemistry (cyclic voltammetry, electrolysis), organic/inorganic synthesis, material characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR), and analytics (GC-MS / LC-MS) is advantageous.
  • You enjoy experimental work in the laboratory and like working in an international team
  • Last but not least, you excel at working independently and scientifically and respond precisely to changing requirements.

What we offer

  • Cutting-edge research across a wide variety of pioneering flagship projects that advance society, the economy — and yourself.
  • The chance to contribute your own ideas as part of a strong team and find solutions for pressing future questions.
  • A tolerant environment with an open culture of learning from mistakes, with support available at any time.
  • State-of-the-art equipment.
  • An on-site cafeteria with daily meal options.

For the preparation of the Master’s thesis, no remuneration is paid. We offer comprehensive supervision and support. Additionally, there is the possibility of entering into a contract as a Research Assistant. Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for student assistants.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that best promote their abilities.
