About the Role

Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Professional Practice, Standards and Development Department is hiring an engineering/geoscience intern student on contract for four months starting in May 2026.   

Reporting to the Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability Initiatives, this position will help to advance intersectionality between climate action, sustainability, equity and reconciliation. The student will work closely with Engineers and Geoscientists BC staff, consultants, registrants, other regulators and external partners to embed social responsibility across the organization and in professional practice. They will collect input and feedback during engagement activities to support the development of a sustainability program for our registrant firms. They will assist in the development of key performance indicators (KPIs) on social responsibility and advance initiatives that integrate climate action and sustainability with equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and truth and reconciliation. This position will also provide support to the preparation and delivery of Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s climate change and sustainability-related professional practice resources and continuing education events.

The intern student hired through this opportunity would participate in the Sustainability Program Working Group, Climate Change and Sustainability Advisory Group, and internal Green Team, and would benefit from learning about steering complex projects and initiatives through collective decision-making. The student will work with staff to coordinate and organize events and various engagement sessions in relation to this project. They will work in a hybrid work environment and will be exposed to the regulatory functions carried out by Engineers and Geoscientists BC. The student will be required to engage in creative and critical thinking, technical analysis, and strategic problem-solving. This internship has been funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) through its Climate Internship Program

RESPONSIBILITIES  

The Intern, Sustainability Engagement will assist the Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability Initiatives to:  

  • Support the development of a sustainability program for firms through coordination with consultants, staff and volunteers.
  • Research tools, resources, and training materials for firms to implement sustainability practices. 
  • Assist in developing social responsibility KPIs.
  • Conduct research and engage in the development of practice resources related to climate change adaptation and GHG mitigation.
  • Draft materials, including training resources and program documents.
  • Support advisory group and working group meetings and associated deliverables. 
  • Support the development of practice guidelines and continuing education sessions relating to climate change and sustainability.  
  • Work on other duties as assigned by the Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability Initiatives.  

Further assignments will be provided to work on other areas of the Climate Change Strategy Implementation and in support of the student’s career goals.   

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?  

  • 3rd or 4th-year student in a four-year college or university engineering or geoscience degree program at UVIC, UBC, SFU or UNBC.
  • Eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC upon graduation.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have an understanding of climate science and sustainability as it relates to the practice of professional engineering and professional geoscience.

This role offers a competitive compensation and benefits program including a salary of $23.50/hour. For contract employees on a short-term contract, we offer: 

  • 8% additional pay in lieu of benefits. 
  • 10 vacation days per annum (pro-rated based on the length of contract). 
  • A flex day program offering additional paid days off (usually alternating Fridays) as a result of a compressed work week. 
  • A hybrid work model with an assigned schedule confirming days worked remotely and days worked in-office. This role will be required to work in-office (Burnaby) a minimum of 2 days per week during regular business operations.  
  • The required tools, equipment, and technology for employees to work remotely are provided. 
  • Free parking is available at the office. Transit reimbursement is offered to employees who take transit to work; we are centrally located near bus and Skytrain stops.
