Originally opened by Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center as an extension of its mission, it is now a patient-owned and operated organization serving more than 50,000 children and adults annually. The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas employs more than 700 professionals and support staff at 18 locations throughout Crawford, Cherokee, Labette, Linn, Montgomery, Allen and Bourbon counties, and Ottawa County in Oklahoma.  The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors which includes patients and community representatives. Medicare, Medicaid, KanCare and private insurance are accepted. Discounted rates for services are available for those meeting financial assistance guidelines. No-one is refused care due to inability to pay.
About the Role

Description

This position is on site in Pittsburg, KS. During the school year, the intern would tentatively work 20-25 hours per week. During school breaks, the intern would tentatively work 40 hours per week.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer, assists with researching, analyzing, and making recommendations to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies such as CMS, FTCA, HRSA, etc. Assists with compliance/legal related tasks related to CHC/SEK’s compliance departments (e.g., Health Information Management, Risk Management, Legal, Pharmacy).

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform research, analysis, and assessment of compliance with federal and state laws and regulations related to Medicare, Medicaid, HIPAA, FTCA, and other government programs. 
  2. Perform tasks associated with patient-driven legal issues; such tasks would be primarily focused on the areas of real estate law, landlord-tenant law, municipality law, and family law.
  3. Provide general clerical support to the General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer, including writing correspondence, maintaining schedule/calendar, screening phone calls, filing, etc.
  4. Organize and maintain documents using an electronic and/or paper filing system, in collaboration with Compliance staff.
  5. Compile documents necessary for surveys, audits, or legal claims.
  6. Perform all duties, services, and documentation in full compliance with CHC/SEK policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  1. Must provide proof of completing 2-3 years of an undergraduate program and be in good standing. 
  2. Enrolled in a law, pre-law, or 3+3 program preferred.
  3. Must possess a valid driver’s license, as travel may be required. Must maintain driving standards- no more than 2 minor or 1 major driving violations within a 3-year lookback period.

  2. Communicates through appropriate channels. Use the proper chain of command for patient complaints.
  3. Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
  4. Must be computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Office products.
  5. Must be able to maintain good inter-personal relationships with co-workers and other members of the health care team and the organization.
  6. Provide customer service in accordance with the organization’s mission.
  7. Be courteous and respectful when interacting with patients and family members.
  8. Maintain patient, business, and/or personnel confidentiality in accordance with the organization’s policy and procedure and HIPAA requirements.


WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Computer work is frequent. Good lighting and a comfortable temperature of ventilation at all times.
