What we’re looking for

As a Bakery Extern, you’ll learn to uphold these same standards by delivering excellent customer service while gaining hands-on experience in maintaining the quality, freshness, and presentation of baked goods. You’ll support the daily operations of the bakery, developing real-world skills through tasks performed with care, attention to detail, and cleanliness.

Your Day-to-Day

  • Follow and complete the Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA) externship curriculum and learning goals. 
  • Provide friendly, helpful service to customers in person and over the phone while learning how to take and manage bakery orders
  • Greet and thank customers to create a welcoming shopping experience, while developing customer service skills the Adams way
  • Assist with packaging, labeling, and merchandising fresh baked goods, with an emphasis on quality and visual presentation
  • Learn how to rotate and stock products following freshness and FIFO protocols to maintain displays
  • Support preparation and production of items such as cakes, muffins, brownies, cream pies, scones, and signature cookies
  • Gain experience with bakery equipment including commercial mixers, rack ovens, and dough sheeters
  • Participate in the preparation and setup of danish, apple cider donuts, parfaits, and other Adams specialties
  • Learn how to scale and mix ingredients using a baker’s scale across various production areas
  • Assist with cleaning and sanitizing bakery equipment, tools, workspaces, and dishes
  • Rotate through key bakery stations including Associate, Porter, Pastry, and Cake Production to support team operations
  • Participate in daily opening and closing routines, including showcase setup, production list creation, and inventory support
  • Collaborate with bakers, decorators, and managers to develop teamwork and communication skills.

  • Current enrollment in the CIA Baking & Pastry program and eligibility for externship placement
  • Willingness to learn about Adams’ full range of bakery products to better serve and assist customers
  • Openness to learning and embodying Adams’ culture, values, and commitment to customer service
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset to work effectively with all bakery staff
  • Enthusiasm for hands-on learning, a positive attitude, and a genuine interest in bakery production

Working Conditions

  • Consistently move, adjust, and position items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for duration of shift
  • Occasionally ascend/descend a stepstool, stepladder, and/or ladder
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers for duration of shift
  • Communicate with others to exchange information
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks including in tight and confined spaces
  • Access to coolers and freezers within the Bakery.
  • Access to garbage and cardboard compactor/crusher.
  • Move and work quickly and productively with other coworkers.
  • Follow all department safety policy and procedures.

The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions – including skill sets, experience, training, certifications and other business needs.

A reasonable estimate of the current range is: $16.50 - $21.45. At Adams, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each situation.
