GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

This is a Co-op Student position working eighty (80) hours bi-weekly, from May 2026 to August 2026 within the Solid Waste Branch of the Environmental Services Department. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit.

 

Under general supervision, the Environmental Technician Co-op Student performs routine technical and regulatory inspections, sampling and analysis relating to various environmental issues. The incumbent is responsible for calibrating, installing and maintaining sampling equipment, collecting samples, recording data, and reporting of analyzed samples to ensure environmental compliance.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Monitor and collect samples to ensure regulatory compliance of snow disposal sites, material stockpiles, runoff areas, chemical spills, potential contaminated sites, historical contaminated sites, landfill leachate, landfill gas wells, waste water lagoons, surface water bodies, groundwater wells (active and closed sites), composting operations, pumphouse operations and potable water quality.
  • Perform additional monitoring and collect samples for any extenuating circumstances.
  • Interpret and understand regulatory testing requirements, interpret test results, and take corrective action as required.
  • Ensure testing compliance with all environmental regulations for Municipal operations, environmental management plans, and facilities.
  • Complete accurate reporting on sampling and analysis results, and environmental compliance for construction, maintenance and operations.
  • Maintain field logbooks and complete chain of custody forms as per regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain daily working diaries, test results, forms, field survey books, hazard incident/accident information and monitor the same as prepared by consultants and contractors.
  • Enter data results received from third-party laboratories into the required government affiliated reporting system, ensuring the quality and accuracy of the data.
  • Prepare or coordinate the development of project scopes of work for tender and quotes.
  • Monitor the project progress of consultants and contractors.
  • Verify the accuracy of progress payment certificate and invoices in relation to stage of project completion as per municipal policy and procedures.
  • Perform minor maintenance of sample sites, such as but not limited to weed whacking and grass mowing, to ensure accuracy when sampling.
  • Assist with regular monitoring of environmental concerns to ensure services meet all requirements as set by Council, regulatory boards, bylaws, or legislation.
  • Respond to public enquiries and provide resolution according to established policies and service levels, which may include testing in residential locations.
  • Coordinate the daily tasks relating to compost operations.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of supplies, tools and equipment required for environmental sampling.
  • Adhere to and support development and revision of municipal policies, procedures, and guiding documents to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Ability to interpret and adhere to requirements pertaining to environmental compliance regulations.
  • Proficiency in the use of various sampling equipment, instruments and tools.
  • Knowledge of water, wastewater, solid waste processes and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy while testing, analyzing, record keeping and in the preparation of reports.
  • Ability to analyze information from a variety of sources and accurately present in a concise manner.
  • Skilled in various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), and proficient with mapping and survey software and hardware.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, demonstrating responsibility and reliability.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in applicable occupational health and safety regulations and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to understand and apply basic project management fundamentals.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Current enrollment in a recognized post-secondary Civil or Environmental Technology diploma program is required.
  • Must be registered in a recognized Co-operative Education (Co-op) program in Civil or Environmental Technology to be eligible for employment.
  • Experience completing environmental sampling to ensure regulatory compliance is considered an asset.

 

 

Candidates who are successful during the interview process will be required to provide the following documents:

 

  • Proof of full-time enrollment in an approved Civil or Environmental Technology Co-op program as outlined above.
  • Contact information for two (2) Supervisory references.
  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check. 
  • A copy of a valid Class Five (5) *Driver’s Licence (non-GDL) and a Driver’s Abstract. *Note: GDL will not be accepted. Proof of licence and a Driver’s Abstract (issued within 30 days) will be required from candidates.
