Data / Energy Trading Analyst Internship
The Fuels and Purchase Power department at Colorado Springs Utilities is looking to a bring a summer intern onto the team. This internship will provide a valuable opportunity for a motivated individual to gain hands-on experience in data analytics related to the power and natural gas commodities markets, supporting our organization's mission to serve the customers of Colorado Springs with safe, reliable, and competitively priced utilities.
*This is a summer only internship from May 26th through August 8th/14th depending on school schedule
The Intern will have the chance to learn about the complexities of gathering and synthesizing large amounts of market data, from initial concept development to final execution. They will focus on assisting in market intelligence research and analysis, technical analysis of energy commodity markets, development and design of analytical tools and models, enhancing data and system connections, and ad-hoc reporting.
This experience will be instrumental in helping the intern understand how using our market data effectively aligns with our strategic objectives of operational excellence, supporting our community, and financial accountability.
Focus of the Data / Energy Trading Analyst Intern:
- Assist Senior Level Energy Trading Analysts by providing analytical support for the purpose of optimizing the Front Office Trading function participation in the energy commodities market
- Assists in the development and improvement of analytical tools, proprietary models, and data connections to enhance trading strategies and improve forecasting
- Assist in finding novel ways to streamline work processes through back-end automation of repetitive and routine tasks and data extractions, possibly by enhancing and redesigning existing in-house built reports, models, and spreadsheets
- Assists with ad-hoc projects and data requests from across the organization
- Assists in developing models and analytical and load forecasting tools leveraged by the Front Office trading to optimize market activities, transactions, and decisions that align with business objectives
Skills the intern will learn:
- Identify market and operational opportunities for the purpose of asset optimization
- How to assist in communication strategies and findings to Front Office, as well as to personnel internal and external to department
- How to analyze reports fundamental and technical Western US, North American and global market trends, including historical prices and data, structural industry changes, and supply / demand balances and changes
- How to provide data for the development of optimization strategies, including annual and monthly plans, around portfolio transactions
- How to advance analytical tools useful in the development of rate case participant positions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or small amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
- Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions within an office working environment.
*This is an on-site, non-remote/non-telecommuting position
*Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc.
*Candidates MUST be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associates/Bachelors/Masters) with a 2.5 GPA and be able to provide documentation if requested. Enrollment in a certification program does not qualify.
