About the Role


MBC Companies is seeking a motivated college student pursuing a degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a related field to join our team as a Safety Intern.

This internship provides hands-on experience in a food manufacturing environment, supporting workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The intern will work closely with the Safety Manager and cross-functional teams to gain practical exposure to OSHA compliance, risk assessment processes, incident investigation, and safety program development.

This position is designed to provide meaningful project ownership and professional development aligned with academic learning objectives.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine safety inspections and hazard assessments within production, warehouse, and maintenance areas
  • Assist with OSHA compliance activities, including recordkeeping and documentation review
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis
  • Support Job Safety Analysis (JSA) development and review
  • Assist with safety training development and delivery (toolbox talks, onboarding support)
  • Conduct PPE compliance audits and recommend corrective actions
  • Assist with maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventory records
  • Support food safety and GMP compliance initiatives as they relate to employee safety
  • Track and follow up on corrective actions from audits and inspections
  • Analyze safety data and prepare reports for leadership review
  • Complete a structured safety improvement project during the internship and present findings to leadership


Internship Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship, the candidate will gain:

  • Practical knowledge of OSHA regulations and food manufacturing safety standards
  • Experience conducting hazard assessments and participating in risk mitigation efforts
  • Exposure to incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies
  • Understanding of safety performance metrics and reporting
  • Experience working in a regulated, audit-driven environment
  • Professional communication experience across operations, maintenance, and leadership teams

Qualifications

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline
  • Minimum sophomore standing preferred

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage projects and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently in a manufacturing environment
  • High attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of coursework in OSHA standards, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, or risk management
  • Previous internship or manufacturing experience
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification (not required but preferred)


Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk production floor for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to wear required PPE (hairnet, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, hearing protection)
  • Comfortable working in temperature-controlled and high-noise environments
