The Department of Energy Resources’ (DOER) mission is to create a clean, affordable, resilient, and equitable energy future for all in the Commonwealth. As the State Energy Office, DOER is the primary energy policy agency for the Commonwealth. Job Description
The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources is seeking an intern to support communications activities as part of the External Affairs team. External Affairs leads DOER’s communications efforts, including media relations, events, web content, and social media. The intern will gain hands-on communications experience in a fast-paced government agency that contributes to Massachusetts’ efforts to address climate change and shape its energy future.
The intern will interact with DOER’s leadership team and work across all program areas. They will work on a variety of initiatives including communications-related projects and an ongoing website reorganization project. To successfully complete these projects, the intern will interact with various DOER staff to gather information and coordinate efforts.
A strong candidate has an interest or experience in communications or a related field, solid written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, experience using a content management system, strong writing and storytelling skills, experience creating social media content, and strong organizational skills. The intern will need to manage multiple projects with concurrent timelines and will need to be proactive, detail oriented, and able to work independently. Knowledge of or interest in Massachusetts’ energy priorities and initiatives is a plus.
Responsibilities:
Work with the External Affairs Manager and DOER Divisions to write various communications-related materials, including press releases, social media content, one-pagers, case studies, and other materials.
Work with the External Affairs Manager and DOER Divisions to plan, execute and publicize events as needed.
Support website redesign project.
Conduct research and update DOER’s media list as needed.
Conduct media monitoring.
Complete other tasks as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficient with graphic design software/platforms such as Canva.
Knowledge of Microsoft suite platforms (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Strong interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to plan, prioritize, and collaborate with others to accomplish assigned work objectives.
Other relevant information:
Hourly rate: $18.00/hour for College Undergraduate Students and $28.00/hour for Graduate Students.
Internship duration: June 1, 2026 – August 14, 2026
Hours per week: Full time – 37.5 hours per week
This position is partially remote with a hybrid schedule that includes a minimum of one day in-office per week
