The Carbon Robotics LaserWeeder™ leverages advanced robotics, computer vision, AI/deep learning, and lasers to eliminate weeds with sub-millimeter accuracy—all without herbicides. This innovative solution reduces environmental impact, promotes soil health, and helps farmers address labor shortages and rising costs. Designed in Seattle and built at our cutting-edge manufacturing facility in Richland, Washington, the LaserWeeder is setting a new standard for automated weed control. Hardware Engineering Intern Template

As a Hardware Engineering Intern at Carbon Robotics, you’ll contribute to the development, testing, and refinement of the hardware systems that power our autonomous agricultural robots. You’ll work alongside experienced mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to support prototype builds, validate components, and help improve the reliability and performance of our field‑deployed platforms. This internship is ideal for someone who is excited about hands‑on engineering, fast‑paced iteration, and building technology that directly impacts modern agriculture.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in the design, assembly, and testing of mechanical and electrical hardware components used in robotic systems.
  • Support prototype builds, including wiring, harness routing, mechanical assembly, and component installation.
  • Perform bench‑level testing, data collection, and documentation of hardware performance.
  • Help diagnose hardware issues through troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and collaboration with senior engineers.
  • Participate in field testing activities, including setup, monitoring, and teardown of test equipment.
  • Update CAD models, drawings, or documentation under the guidance of engineering mentors.
  • Work cross‑functionally with mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to support ongoing development efforts.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of hardware processes, test methods, and component reliability.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Success:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Foundational understanding of mechanical or electrical design principles.
  • Hands‑on experience with tools, lab equipment, or prototyping (coursework or personal projects welcome).
  • Familiarity with CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) or basic circuit design concepts.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and willingness to learn through experimentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑moving, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Enthusiasm for robotics, automation, or agricultural technology.

Bonus Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Experience with soldering, wiring, or harness assembly.
  • Exposure to thermal, structural, or vibration testing.
  • Basic Python or MATLAB for data analysis.
  • Experience working with heavy equipment, machinery, or outdoor field testing environments.

Carbon Robotics follows equitable hiring practices. Flexibility in our hiring process allows hiring of talent at levels different from what are posted.  The compensation range outlined is based on a target budgeted base salary. Individual base pay depends on various factors such as relevant experience and skill, Interview assessments and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements. Offers are determined using our equitable hiring practices. Carbon Robotics offers additional compensation in the form of benefits premiums, pre-IPO stock options and On Target Earning commissions for appropriate positions. Base pay ranges are reviewed each year. We are committed to the principle of pay equity – paying employees equitably for similar work.
